Search for the Oldest Wheel Horse Tractor

Recommended Posts

Cable

Search results are revealed in a 1996 “Horse Power†article and some letters Wheel Horse received are shared with the reader.

This piece is a follow up to “Excerpt Fall Winter 1995 "Horse Power" under Misc Items in Manuals which you may want to read if you haven’t already. The main article is “The Wheel Horse Legend - 50 Years in the Makingâ€, but the contest for the oldest Wheel Horse tractor is introduced.

Mr. Thanks to Ed Cole for sharing this with me.

Does anyone know who won that "oldest Wheel Horse" contest back then?  It would be great if we could see and read about the tractor that won.

Walt Snyder won.

You can get to the publication in either of two ways; 1.) click on the link in my post that started this thread, or 2.) go to "Manuals" and you will see on the left side of your screen "Top Downloads - Past Month".  The second item there is "Search for the Oldest Wheel Horse tractor."  It is a short download.

You may also find the item above it interesting, "Excerpt Fall Winter 1995 "Horse Power" Wheel Horse History" which includes a piece that introduces the contest.  The second link in the post that started this thread is a link to that article.

I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I did.

Bruce

Sorry, I asked a dumb question.  When I first clicked on each link, the same PDF came up each time.  Now, I see the second magazine.  Thanks for being so nice an patient with me.  :)

I think it would be a good idea to have this "contest" again with members on this forum.  I believe that some members have older Ponds than the one listed in the magazine article.

The Wheel Horse Collector’s Club had its first meeting June 5th, 1999. At first Don, Cindy, and Jeff Kane intended this small group to meet at their home but the meeting was moved to South Mountain Fair grounds, Arendtsville, PA,  when the anticipated group size increased.

What started out as Don and Jeff Kane’s father-son hobby soon turned into an effort to start a Wheel Horse garden tractor restorers’ club.  This gathering was the first in the country exclusively for Wheel Horse products. A total of sixty Wheel Horses were present and about forty-nine people including wives and children. People from Florida, Connecticut, Alabama, Maryland, Minnesota, Ohio, South Carolina, Virginia, and Indiana attended.

The Toro Corporation supported the event in several ways including supplying door prizes. Ed Cole of Toro Corporation,  brought a number of Wheel Horse branded items and everyone who attended to the end got something.  During later shows, these items went into the raffle. Ed said, "I think a hat was passed around to help the Kane's with all the expenses they had, as they bought everything out of their pocket.  I went back and got a check from Toro to cover the expense. This continued for several years until the club became self-sustaining.  Toro also helped in later years by covering all/half the cost of hats sold at the show."

Forty-nine of Ed Cole's photos of the meeting are at:

"Today's Compact Tractor" is a 1969 article about the genealogy of the compact tractor, originally published in Lawn/Garden/Outdoor Living Magazine in 1969. Reader needs to keep in mind as the article is read that the present day is 1969.

The search is over. This clip from the Spring/Summer 1996 edition of “Horse Power†reveals the contest winner. The publication "Horse Power" had a three page article in their Fall/Winter 1995 edition titled "The Wheel Horse Legend - 50 Years IN The Making." Included is a quote from Cecil Pond and a contest titled "The Search For The Oldest "Horse"".

My thanks to Ed Cole for sharing this with me.
