1533 bearing rebuild

Recommended Posts

1979 C-121

Hi guys,

Been lurking a while.  I have a 1979 C-121 8 speed that I am rebuilding the transmission for.  I have everything apart and got one of the 1533's out that has a rough spot.  I would like to attempt to rebuild the bearing since it seems to be in relatively good shape, but can not figure out how to get the cage out.  Any rebuild tips would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Thanks!!  I had found that thread in my searches, but I guess I didn't read far enough.  Was sitting here spinning the bearing while searching online and it starting spinning more freely, so I cleaned it again and it seems to spin quite nicely now.  Still one spot that isn't perfectly smooth, but it will spin for five seconds if I give it a good spin.  Thinking it is good enough for now, and if it comes down to it, I'll replace it with another later on.

Hi there,

I've just bought a couple of metric bearings to try,  6908 or 61908 which are 62mm x 40mm x 12mm, they are a fraction under on the o/d and over on the i/d so a couple of thin sleeves should bring them up to the 2.5"x 1.5" x 0.5" of the 1533 bearing. The only thing will be if they are strong enough, but the beauty would be, NO CASE OR DIFF MODS ! just a little lathe time  Has anyone tried these ???

1979 and Ranger, Don't know if same bearing Ranger mentions, but my friend Pacer (Bill) fixed up a couple like this:

He made it look easy, but that's experience I spose :handgestures-thumbup:

No, groundhog47, this bearing is a metric size, the one Pacer used fitted the diff but the cases he machined out to take the larger o/d 2.625" instead of 2.5".

the  6908 bearing bore is a couple of mm larger than the diff so a sleeve could be fitted, the o/d is around 1.5mm smaller than the bore in the case so again a sleeve can be fitted. as I said the concern would be whether they are strong enough, although if someone could supply ready made kits, they should be a straight swop for the 1533.
