tomtractor 71 #1 Posted November 28, 2014 Hello, My WH 312 choke cable is frozen in the cold. what are suggestions for replacing the cable. Fix the cable, Repalce with TORO brand cable or use aftermarket cable inside the old sheathing. What has worked for people in the past? Suggestions? Thanks
Racinbob 10,276 #2 Posted November 28, 2014 Obviously moisture in the cable Tom. I had that happen once but it was an extreme situation. The GT1100 had just been removed from a pond on a super bowl sunday I just let it thaw and dry out then lubricated it well. I like the plastic coated cables but they tend to hold moisture more than the uncovered cables.
sorekiwi 761 #3 Posted November 28, 2014 My 310 used to do that in the winter too. When I finally got tired of heating the lowest part of the cable with a heat gun every time I needed to push snow, I finally fixed it. TT suggested soaking the cable in antifreeze. But not having any to hand, I poured some fuel line deicer (Heet?) down the cable. Its been fine ever since. I do make sure that the little rubber boot on the end of the cable is in its proper place, to stop any moisture running down it.

doc724 924 #6 Posted November 28, 2014 Every winter I had this problem. Even with the little boot on, water would get inside as a result of the end of the year washing in November. Not pressure washing, just with a hose. I tried everything to prevent it including grease where the wire goes through the rubber boot. Nothing worked and as soon as the cold weather hit, I had to put a 100 watt bulb under the lowest point in the cable to thaw out the water. I finally threw in the towed and bought a new one. Yes, it was a Toro one, but it was probably 6 years ago-prices were lower then. Never had a problem after that. I do like the home remedies that you all have suggested. I will keep them in mind in case I have a problem with the 314.
Wheel-N-It 2,967 #7 Posted November 29, 2014 I dont have the cold temps that you guys have, but what works for me is every time I shut the engine down I pull the choke lever out to the full choke position. For some reason the cable never freezes up when I do this but wwill freeze up if I dont. I have no idea why but its always worked for me.
MalMac 1,328 #8 Posted November 29, 2014 There was a service bulletin on this way back when. Toro came out with some type of cap to put over the cable area. I was told by a dealer that it really did not work well and Toro more or less dropped the matter. What I started doing was cutting a inner tube and placing it over the whole control cable area. Really helps keep the snow from blowing in there when blowing snow. Also coating them with water proof grease helps.
