I READ ALONG TIME AGO (SOMEWHERE) THAT YOU CAN MOUNT A NEW MODEL DECK ON THE OLDER MODEL HORSES THAT USE THE GEAR DRIVE DECKS??

I HAVE AN 857 TRACTOR AND I'D LIKE TO TRY THAT,,,,

HAS ANYONE HEARD OF THIS ?

I've been thinking about this swap for my Commando 8.   I have a  restored 36" deck, spare mule drive and attach-a-matic.

An electric PTO  would be the easiest way to power the deck.

That's one I've never tried. I'm thinking the deck would mount without much difficulty. A mule drive on the front wouldn't be a problem. Now a way to engage/disengage the PTO. Adapt an electric clutch. Anything bigger than a 36" might be a bit much for the 8hp though.

You can use a manual PTO, preferably an older one from the 60's that uses the long engagement bar like the set-up pictured.CAM00266_zpsf508419b.jpg

I like this Auto.   I think the 8HP Kohler has a 1" dia PTO. Do you know what other engines have the 1" dia ?

That setup is a good idea Ed. It would be an easy adaptation. If you find one for the larger shaft motors you'll just need the bearing race to fit it to your 8hp.

I have a small pulley like pictured above but went with the typical larger one, 1st gear was still low enough to mow or push snow/dirt but 3rd would fly. I think you'd be better of with the small pulley so the belt guard would fit. I also used a C100 frame and raider hood and fenders, but that was for the new mule drive and old look. I think a raider or charger mule drive and deck would work on a short frame. With the newer decks the outside rollers will hit the front tires so keep that in mind. Oh yeah that hood stand is from a 855. Hope this helps some
