Fuel pump/carb problem

Recommended Posts

tsully501

I acquired a c-85 wheel horse when we bought our house. Worked great first 2 years but I recently am having problem with carb/ fuel pump..

engine will turnover and start but then shuts off.. then when I try to start again it just revs up but I can't get it to start. . Then gas will come out of air filter. .

I took to mechanic and he used a kit for carb but didn't think it would work. . It worked for a month but I'm having same problem again. .

What do you think is problem. . Need to replace fuel pump. . Please help

Hello and :WRS:

It sounds like the float may be sticking, especially if it's a lot of gas coming out of the carb.  :)

Thanks geno. Mechanic replaced the carb and it seems to still be happening. . He thought it could be full pump but I have no idea. . I am not mechanically inclined what so ever. .

I agree with Geno.....still a carb problem......float may need adjusted...maybe the seat/needle is bad.

Find another mechanic or friend that can install a carb kit.....correctly.

Yea, It's the carb.  You know you're getting gas to the carb , so It's not the fuel pump.

Now this morning it started right up. . But only ran for about 30 seconds then began to putter and turn off. . Seemed to only burn the fuel that was in the carb.. tried restarting and same problem occurred. . Gas coming out of front air filter. .

I think what you are actually experiencing is flooding, not starving of fuel. I am with the others on the carb float being bad or not working properly.

The gas in the carb bowl alone will run the tractor for more than a minute.

What kind of fuel pump is on it now?? original style or aftermarket replacement/ automotive style

it could have too much fuel pressure causing it too flood :eusa-think:

Start at the float, there is a problem with it. Fuel should not pass AT ALL when that carb bowl is full. Check that float for a hole. Remove the float from the carb and shake it near your ear. If you hear fuel shaking inside, there is a hole in it and it will not float to it's proper level. It takes time for fuel to get inside of it so maybe that's why it was OK for a while and then the problem returned. The float can be repaired with solder after getting all the fuel out.

Did the mechanic REPLACE the entire carb or rebuild the carb?

The mechanic had used a kit I guess to rebuild the carb. . Thanks everyone for the feedback

After it sputters and dies check the spark and see if its wet, that should show if its flooding.

Thanks everyone for the insight. . I took it after work to the mechanics and it was the carb. . Changed out a rubber needle and cleaned everything out along with putting on a fuel filter because there was none. . Fired right up and seems great. Also the bowl was dented on the one side a slight bit from someone tapping on it he said. . So put the dent to the rear. . He said that could of also been the problem because it wasn't allowing the float to work properly. . Thanks everyone for the help

Changing oil tomorrow and putting the weights. . Chains. . And snowblower and plow on to get ready to take on the winter. .

Glad you got her going.

Same mechanic? Hope he didn't charge you anything! Those are simple issues that should've been addressed the first time if he had the carb off the machine.
