Tim Bergfeld 55 #1 Posted October 21, 2014 So I am talking to a friend today about my 520 diesel project. He brought up a good point I am taking a great running rig and taking the motor off it to put it on the shelf. So what do you guys think buy a cheap 520 with a ragged out engine and use that. And if that is the case I need it to be tiller ready so I can use my tiller as well as the old snow blower to play with. Or should I just use my rig I wanted a diesel 520 for a while now and I have four small diesels to choose from out in the shop I think I am using the d722 turbo that's right the turbo diesel horsey Tim
bmsgaffer 2,043 #2 Posted October 21, 2014 Geno has a 520 with a shot engine but in otherwise great shape... You may want to talk with him. I think if you are going to throw a giant diesel in it, you should work up an 8 speed of some sort (not necessarily a 520). The hydro will probably be your weakest link (even though it is quite strong) but those 8 pinion 8 speeds are bullet proof. You can swap in the swept axle with a little work and the wider tires if that is important to you. At least that would open up the possibilities to many different models. km3h 543 #4 Posted October 21, 2014 A good running 510 is a nice thing to have in the stable. I have a motto. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I would look for a 520 with a bad engine and go that rout. As for the transmission, I doubt it will make any difference, unless you ask it to do way more than the 210 HP Onan is capable of, which is a lot more than most folks ask it to do. In the end, it is your tractor and ultimately your decision. Good luck.
bmsgaffer 2,043 #5 Posted October 21, 2014 I did research and didnt realize that that engine was only 20hp. I was just assuming it was larger. In that case, the hydro should be just fine as long as its a relatively low hour unit. Though I still think the 8 speed will give you the best grunt. How do you interface anything to that flywheel plate? Ive never worked on the larger engines like that...
