I don't know if I have a small sledge home. I will have to check. Think a 16 oz framing hammer will work?

Sure, I think it'll do better than the dead blow....

If the relatively soft woodruff key is damaging your chisel, I think I would not buy that brand of chisel again.

It was an old, crummy chisel anyway. I was more surprised at how relentless this key is!

Ok. It is out! I drilled three holes down into the key, shot some PB down in there, and when I tapped on it (with a four pound sledge) from the wheel end it bent up and out of the keyway. It took everything I had yesterday (about an hour and a half), so I will work on the seals later this week.

"tapped"  with a 4 pound sledge --I like it. It really amazing how something like this can turn into such an ordeal, glad you got it out...

Wake,,,, finally,,,,,,celebration. Miller time. Rockets and flares shoot into the sky. Sigh of relief. Ok, on to the next phase.
