Found my first Wheel Horse project

Recommended Posts

motor12

Been looking for my first Wheel Horse and located just what I wanted. It's an 854. Like I was told on this forum, get ready for a road trip. So I did , my wife and I drove from Texas to Missouri and picked it up. We got home and I put a battery in it and it started right up, no smoke and it drives in all gears. Going to dig into it tomorrow to see just what I really have. The seller was nice and threw in an original pan seat . I'm happy with the 854 and will be asking a lot of questions of this forum. Thanks.

Nice 854.  Yours is in a bit better shape than the one I started with in my avatar.  I'm sure it will look great when you're done.  You will have a lot of fun cleaning, repairing, painting and sourcing parts.  I look at it as a bonding experience with the tractor.  This forum is great and you will learn a lot and make friends along the way.  Welcome!

Welcome to Redsquare, I also have an 854 here in UK ,although they are extremely rare over this side of the pond, they are great fun to tinker with & you will now probably develop a long love relaxation ship with your new found friend.

In fact you will probably spend more time with your tractor than your Mrs

Yep, in Texs it takes a road trip most of the time to get what you want. At lest you got a good one to restore. Hope your happy with it, they are fine little tractors.  :)

Worked on the 854 project today, started the tear down and most everything seems to be in good shape with the exception of the carb. Every other screw was broken off or missing and even some sheet metal screws were used in place of the machine screws. The only other problem is the steering wheel, its kinda stubborn so I have it soaking in penetrating oil, hope it comes off the 3/4 in. shaft with out damage.

Looks like a good project.  My first was an 854 too.  You might want to consider leaving the steering wheel on if it's in good shape.  They are almost always a pain to get off, and if you can get them off it's hard not to damage them in the process.  I look forward to seeing more of your progress. You are off to a great start.

I have been away from the 854 project for a couple of days but back at it again. I am taking most of the sheet metal to be sand blasted this coming Tuesday and will do the metal repair that same week. I want to get some primer on the metal as soon as I can. The carb is in need of a rebuild and has a broken machine screw that needs to be removed. The wiring will also be redone. One of the most difficult tasks was removing the tires from the wheels, they were rusted on the rims. I will post some photos of my progress in the coming weeks.

Did some cleaning and sanding on the frame and trans today and put on a coat of Sunset red paint. It was an all day project but worth it.
