All 400 series had 1 1/8" axles with 8 pinions and 8" front wheels. Some of the 300 series had 1" axles with 4 pinions and 6" front wheels. I think that is the main difference.

312 & 314 from 1992 and newer had 1-1/8 axles with 8 pinion diffs. I suspect once TORO dropped the 8 & 10 hp models they stuck w one tranny.

Not much... marketing mostly.

Like they said, some of them had the smaller axles and lighter diffs. Other differences were the lights/gauges etc.

But 90% is marketing. If you throw a 16hp in and you have the 1 1/8" axles then you have made a 416-8 for the most part. The 416 in later years had a twin Onan instead of a single Kohler.

Frame, sheet metal and all other mechanical parts are exactly the same. The differentiation between series' were never very clear and changed from year to year.

Not all 4 series had the 8 inch front rims... But most did.

 Now that surprises me. I thought all 400's had the 8" fronts. It amazes me how many little quirks the various models had through the years.

Me too!

I'm not sure that the first number really ever meant anything besides the price you paid (originally) for it.

416 > 516

418 > 518 (different model engines though)

314 = 414 (Although some had 1" axles)

Mind boggling really.

Don't feel bad. I once owned a 518. Before purchasing the 518 I didn't do my home work and I took for granted that it was basically a 520 minus 2 hp and a few bells and whistles. Well, when I found out that it had an Eaton 700 in it from the factory and not an 1100 I wasn't too happy! I felt as if I was robbed! And yet we have 3 and 4 series with 1100's.. Call it what you want, Wheel Horse trying to save money etc. but that was a lame move on their part...
