bo dawg 476 #1 Posted September 28, 2014 I thought my C-175 was a big tractor, but dog gone this C-195 is a monster of one. Love it! Mowed for a while with it today and was pretty sweet, been better if it was a 5' deck instead of 4'. It does have a problem with the steering. Other than being a bear (2 handed) to turn, it will make a pop noise if you're not rolling much at all. Not sure what is popping but thinking its at the gear at end of steering shaft skipping a tooth.
AMC RULES 36,944 #2 Posted September 28, 2014 Two really nice lookin' machines there... steering...though a PITA, should be an easy fix.
JERSEYHAWG / Glenn 4,487 #3 Posted September 28, 2014 Great pictures. The walk around from all angels shows that size difference. Don't know what that pop would be. Best of luck. Glenn
Brrly1 1,146 #4 Posted September 28, 2014 Good looking tractors. Just guessing but it sounds like slop in the steering possibly some spacers might be needed or maybe everything is wore out. You might have to replace a part or two. Hopefully Not. Does it happen when you got the steering wheel cranked all the way? I've got a GT14 that does the same thing. Steering gear on the shaft going past the big fan gear will make a big pop.
Bert 760 #5 Posted September 28, 2014 Both are sweet machines, I really like how the hood is painted on your C175 and the C195 is huge!

Steering gear on the shaft going past the big fan gear will make a big pop. No it will pop soon as I start turning, basicly putting pressure on it. But only when stopped or barely rolling along, manuvering around or turning around in tighter places. If that makes sense. I jacked up the front end and checking for anything obvious and there is some looseness at the pin that gos thru the axle, not sure how tight it should be though. and seems like some looseness between the steer shaft and the fan gear part. AMC RULES 36,944 #8 Posted September 28, 2014 So, no tooth damage on either, the fan or pinion?
bo dawg 476 #9 Posted September 28, 2014 Thanks for the comments guys, yeah I love it, its something I always wanted and almost past it up cause he threw a big number out at me. Then he said he needed the money in a bad way, so....... this just might work!
Geno 1,928 #10 Posted September 28, 2014 They look good sitting there together.
papaglide 541 #11 Posted September 28, 2014 Really nice looking tractors you got there. I agree with Brrly1 regarding the steering: if that's what it is, it's an easy fix. I would really like one of those 195's someday too!
bo dawg 476 #12 Posted September 28, 2014 So, no tooth damage on either, the fan or pinion? No not that I can tell by feeling around on it. Maybe some wear, the teeth feel smooth on edges maybe not as crisp edge as should be. How much slop should the axle have at the pin? I dont think that would cause the poping noise but good to know. chipwitch 73 #13 Posted September 28, 2014 I have that popping sound on my C-125. Only happens when you get close to full left or full right while sitting still. Feels just like you described... like a tooth jumping a gear. I'm far from an expert, but my steering gets difficult to turn just before it "pops" which I am guessing puts too much stress on the steering gear. You say yours is a bear to turn. Maybe it's because of too much stress caused by the spindles sticking in the axle. I'd check to see if something in the steering is dragging. Jack up the front to see if it's still difficult. Even just a light drag could be causing the gear to skip a tooth for such a big machine while standing still. Just a thought.

Mine will pop just starting to turn.
neil 2,398 #15 Posted September 28, 2014 Both great looking tractors , would love to own the c195 but they don't exist in Europe .
Brrly1 1,146 #16 Posted September 29, 2014 Neil, when has that ever stopped you? What kind of tractor do you have that was "from across the pond"? Senior what?
shallowwatersailor 3,213 #17 Posted September 29, 2014 The steering support for the steering wheel shaft may be worn. If it hasn't been greased regularly (missed most of the time by PO,) it may be egg-shaped and allowing the vertical steering shaft to move. I had the same problem on one of my 520-H but used a 3/4" collar instead of the cotter to keep it tight to the sector gear to see if it eliminated the problem. I later replaced the support.
