My plan tonight is to turn over the engine and see how it is running.

 

Guy who sold it to me suggested I fill the oil reservoir with kerosene and crank it over a few times, drain it. Fill it with lightweight oil and run it for 10-15 minutes at idle. Drain that and fill it with SAE-30 as the mainstay oil.

 

I have read mixed reviews about the kerosene flush. Some say to cut the oil 50/50 with kerosene, some say use SeaFoam instead and others say SeaFoam is an expensive form of kerosene.

 

I have read others say to use ATF instead as the initial cleanser, run 5-10 minutes at idle. Change out for a lightweight oil and run 10--15 minutes and change that for SAE-30.

Thoughts?

Update: I talked to a few tractor guys here at work and did a little internet digging, and decided I wasn't comfortable with the kerosene flush.

 

I am going to start my flush by emptying the current oil, and filling it with an 80/20 ATF/Marvel Mystery Oil combo. I will run that for 15-20 minutes and drain it. Then I fill it with an 80/20 of 10W40/MMO and run it for a half hour or so while I disassemble more frame parts. After that I will empty the oil and fill it with an 80/20 of SAE-30/MMO and run it for a few minutes at idle. I will leave that oil in the engine, and if during this whole process it doesn't smoke I will probably just clean the crud off the engine itself and set it aside while I paint the frame.

So I went home and (much to the misses' dismay) went outside to play with the engine. I drained off the old oil and put a quart of ATF in and 8 oz of MMO. The level on the dipstick was perfect. I attached the battery and cranked her over (she took a little work to get over, but got going) and no smoke! Ran like a charm. She was a little loud since the muffler was rotten and the guts fell out. I have to grab a new muffler, and I think this one will do the job: Muffler for Wheel Horse... It has a 1" female pipe thread, which is what I need and looks like a clean version of the one I have on there now.

I am going to crank her over again with the current ATF/MMO mixture and let her run again for 15-20 minutes tonight and then will drain her off. I will add the lightweight (10W40)/MMO mix for the next time I idle her.

Thanks! I am excited to hear it once the new muffler comes in!

 

Should I clean the carburetor with a shot of carb cleaner or should I take it off and give it a good cleaning? I am afraid of tearing a (maybe) delicate/corroded gasket that would have been ok otherwise.

 

Thoughts?

I usually try to get them in order while you're at the point you are.  Nothing worse than getting all done, or ready to use, then you have to take the carb off and clean it.  :eusa-doh:

Alright. I'll finish my oil change regiment and when I dismount the engine from the frame I will pull the carb off and give it a thorough cleaning.

Do you just use Carb/Choke cleaner (in the spray can) to clean it?

Yep, just keep it away from the rubber seal for the bowl.
