Early 60's Shift Pattern & S/N

Hey TD, now you've got the printing on aluminum down, how about these?

miscdecals-1.jpg

(this is one of TT pictures). Ed Mayhew does them, but they come blank like TT's picture. Would it be possible to reproduce these with someones specific serial number printed on it? Here's a kinda crappy picture where you can kinda see the serial number (I can scan this decal so you can identify the font...)

IMG_1833a.jpg

It would be excellent if we could get them from you complete with the serial #.

As Curly would say "WHY CERTAINLY"

Could you give me the correct width and height of these two and I will post pictures.

When liste will ask for your seriel number before making them.

Very Good Idea.

You da man, TD.

The decal itself is 2 3/4" tall, by 2 1/4" wide.

I'll have to scan one of the decals so you can get a clear view of how the serial itself looks

You'll likely run into needing two different fonts/sizes for the '62s and early '63s. Their serial numbers started out with a 62 which was a slightly smaller print than the rest of the number. And I could use a couple of each style.

I HAVE THE TEMPLATE AS CLOSE AS I CAN GET IT.

JUST THE SLIGHTEST DIFFERENCE IN A FEW LETTERS OF THE FONTS.

IT IS THE CORRECT SIZE SO ALL I NEED IS A GOOD IMAGE OF THE NUMERALS ON THE SERIAL NO.

THIS IS WHAT I THOUGHT I WAS SEEING IN THE FIRST IMAGE.

WILL BE OUT OF TOWN TOMORROW BUT WILL CHECK THE BOARDS AND EMAILS WHEN WE RETURN.

TD

This is the corrected serial number decal. I will be listing these soon.

I am assuming they would have used these on many different models and years?

Terry, this is one of TT's pics from a very old post. (oh... and I don't think there should be a "6" on the template you posted.)

....right down to the slight offset of the last two digits of the serial number. What incredible attention to detail! :banghead:

Nice work, Terry!

I think Jason is right here - even with the decal in front of me I couldnt decide if the first digit was a "6" or just a mark on a 50 year old decal! but now I'm sure it's just a mark - the serial # is just "31420"

Here is the other variation (that Jim was talking about) on the same decal (this one on my 502). It has a "62" printed before the serial.

You really do wonders Terry!

Yep, that's it! I haven't noticed any of these with more than four digits. It seems that, if these were used for the '62s and some '63s, that WHI would have made more than 9999 tractors in that time frame. Anybody got one with five digits after the "62"? :banghead:

Beautiful TD, save that one for me, and do one like the picture of the one on my 502 (with the "62-").

These were used on most (all?) '62 and '63 model tractors, 502, 552,702,Lawn Rangers. I'm not sure of which '63 models other than the Rangers, probably everything that used the white dashboard decal you just did?

The fact that we can get them complete with the correct serial #'s is awesome!

I think (from previous discussions on and off this board) that the 62- prefix was probably intended to designate the model year, and this idea was abandoned quickly when they realized they didn't know how many decals to make ahead of time and it was just as easy to do without since they still had to stamp the serial number on it anyway. they were used on the 62s and the early 63 models used them up until they ran out. (probably at 9999), at which point they started over the serial numbers without the prefix. That explains how my 1960 and my 1963 tractors are only 4000 numbers different. The definitely built more than 4000 tractors in 3-4 years!

Dustin... that sound about right?

The new numbers start with the 1962 model year which was considered a "major engineering change". Numbers kept running althought the 62- prefix was dropped. Like we discussed, probably intended to designate the year then realized it wasn't realistic to do so. Considering how they liked to use up materials it made more sense to leave the prefix off. Was Wheel Horse ahead of their time with lean manufacturing as well? Pioneers once more. :USA:

Why they didn't use a longer serial number with some type of encoding built in is beyond me. :banghead: I realize they did recognize product changes by serial number range, but it would be splended if we could look at that number and be able to break down date of manufacture etc.

This one appears to have a five digit serial number after the 62. It's the 603 on Ebay.e6e0_121.jpg

The following was moved here from the original thread.

TT Posted on October 09, 2008 05:59 pm

The shift pattern decal is 2 1/4" wide by 1 21/32" high.

The "Depress Clutch...." decal is 2 7/16" wide by 11/16" high. (it is the creme color - not white)

Both of these are for all three 1961 models.

vinylguy52 Posted on October 09, 2008 11:22 pm

These should be correct now TT

Thanks TD, just sent you an email.

I love the way you replicate the "wonky" printing on the serial itself. :hide:

Got 'em today Terry.

Excellent work! These are a perfect replica. I tried to take a side by side picture, but the flash was doing weird things off the chrome. I couldnt get one that does TD"s decal justice.

Suffice to say I am very happy with the results.
