i wired up my 1054 using the diagram i got from another member.i forgot who from.where he had added a solidnoid.i had my s/g rebuilt.what a deference that made. started right up.while its running i ajusted the carb.smoothed it out.turned the key off an restarted it this time a little sluggish starting. got it running.after a few minutes running i disconected the positive side of battery an it died.so that tells me it was using the battery to run and not charging battery.i had to put it back on charge cause battery was dead again.what do i need to do?any ideas anybody?

Tom, measure the battery voltage after a good overnight trickle charge - should be 12.6 volts or higher

Measure the battery voltage WHILE THE ENGINE IS CRANKING - the voltage should stay above 10 volts. You may want to disconnect the spark plug to allow the engine to crank for 10 - 15 seconds. This will "load test" the battery. An unhealthy battery will drop its voltage quickly as the engine cranks for 10 - 15 seconds.

If the voltage stays above 10 volts, reconnect the spark plug and start the engine. If the SG and regulator are functioning properly, the battery voltage should read between 13.8 to 14.5 volts. Any higher or lower, the regulator could be out of adjustment.

Also remember an SG unit can be a good starter motor but still not be a good charge voltage generator. If the field coils in the SG are not functioning properly, the SG will motor but not generate.
