Can someone please post the wiring diagram for a WheelHorse chager 12 Model 1-7231, with a push button ignition and a generator light.

The wiring diagram in this 1967 model 1277 manual should be the same as your 1968 early production Charger 12. They both used the K301S-4712b engine with starter/generator and battery ignition.

 

The original ignition switch is # 7263 and it replaced the 4988 switch used in 1967. Here is a picture of the back of it.

 

This 7263 switch is a heavy duty switch that will handle the high current required by the starter. If you have a push button starter I suspect the ignition switch has been replaced with a standard light duty switch and the push button handles the high starter current.

 

The 7263 switch is still available from Toro but expensive at over $50. Many now use a stardard battery ignition switch plus a starter solenoid to carry the high current. Both would be about the same cost but accomplish the same thing using more common parts and likely last longer.
