Now that I know it's, a K-90 is it worth saving?

Recommended Posts

How about thoughts on what's inside.

Pulled the head off last weekend.

Pictured is what I found.

Worth saving? or too badly damaged

As I mentioned  in previous post, flywheel turns freely, piston /valves  go up and down - that doesn't  mean much but it's something.

What are the determining factors in deciding whether to fish or cut bait?

I have no experience rebuilding an engine but I'm game if nothing else

More pics required of bottom of engine, piston, crank?

Also drained the oil - was pleasantly surprised to find at least  1/2 quart.

I would get the piston cylinder measured and go from there

Everything there looks fine except showing strong indication its using a lot of oil. Measure the cyl bore - you just might luck out and get by with rings.

I think so also...check it out and see what you actually have...they are worth saving.  :)  Plenty of help on here to walk you through it, and the learning experience in itself is worth a million bucks.

X2 all the way. Looks like your valves move ok to the crank. Don't be nervous about the oil...(I'd be dirty too if I didn't take a bath in 40+ years)

So pull the piston and get both it and the cylinder measured.

O.k. I'll see about getting the piston out.

What will that tell me?

If they are within factory tolerances then I've got at good shot rebuilding this engine?

cheers

Absolutely, that will tell you everything.  Use calipers to get an idea.  Let us know.  :)

Absolutely worth saving. Ive saved a whole lot worse than that. Pop that thing apart and measure your bore, more than likely find its wore out of round find a reputable machine shop and get on a first name basis with them. only way I would never proceed is if on inspection you found any kind of a crack in the cylinder wall. I have a K 301 that has a chunk missing from the lower end of the cylinder from where a rod let loose-piston does not travel that far.had it bored .010 new internals overhaul kit from e bay and prob have 300 hours on it no trouble. your mileage may vary!. Even if it was cracked if you threw enough time and money at it you could have it fixed, but that is where I draw a line in the sand.Regards.

Without question, save it. Print out the manual here, ask questions and that one can be humming in short order.

I've looked at the disassembly instructions for the K-91 and do I need follow the order in the manual

ie.  remove the flywheel and valves etc.

I really just want to get the oil pan off and remove piston / connecting rod etc.

Then do my measurements.

And if there really are no dumb questions any advice on removing the exhaust pipe and muffler

I don't want to damage it, obviously, but if I'm going to be spending some time with the engine I've got to get that thing off.

I've done the wd40 thing but no luck.

I think I need to bolt it back on the chassis to be able to generate some torque.

Don't have a bench or vise and need engine bolts anyway.

Any advice would be appreciated

cheers

From what I can gather the fact that the exhaust & muffler is intact is a big bonus.

I have no intention of getting it off at at all costs.

My issue is that it's rusted in place pretty good.

I need advice to remove WITHOUT damaging it.

That K90 looks like a keeper. Here's a pic of a 1976 K241 I overhauled a couple of months ago. Look in the upper right hand corner and you can clearly see the top ring. The bore on that engine showed just over .001 wear and with a good honing, new piston, rings, rod and seals runs like a new one. When I turned it over and removed the rod bolts the piston fell on the ground without any assistance from me.

I would wait and see what's going on inside the engine first and try to just leave it on there.  :woohoo:
