400 is very fast, shouldn't take a few minutes to do all the sheet metal.  Higher numbers just mean more time.  :)

I think I'd sooner take lots more time and have it right vs short time and sand through it to bare metal

May be a good idea until you get used to how wetsanding works and how different grits cut.  Do you have something you can use as a a practice piece?

The seat pan looked the same as the rest of the parts but dried like this. I really dont want to go back to bare metal but may have no choice here....Ugh...the rest will be red today hopefully

No I didnt Geno...I sanded and primed it just like every other piece of the 416 puzzle. All came out looking super except the seat pan...I dont want to jinx myself but I only had 1 run on the back of a footboard and its sanded right out. Wetsanding the rest of the parts now...I guess your answer confirmed I need to get to bare metal on that seat pan now....ugh and double ugh....dads birthday is in a week...Im scrambling now

Ok heres one I may get hung over but I need to expedite things and money just got really tight due to an oil burner failure that I now need to replace so I have heat.... Tonight I stripped all the paint off the fender pan that looked like wrinkle paint...I was wondering if I can use a good spray bomb primer instead of spending another $60 on PPG primer/surfacer and hardener and the topcoat with the PPG urethane paint I have now. Dads birthday is next Tuesday and I have just about run out of time. There is no red on any of the grey stuff yet and My nights are booked big time this week...MAYDAY!!!!  :confusion-helpsos:  :confusion-helpsos:  :confusion-helpsos:

Just so I don't have to go back through all the posts, what kind of primer is that?

I've seen paint crackle when it is applied too thick and dries too fast.

I wonder if there were 2 different bases involved.   :eusa-think:

The primer was PPG JP 202 primer surfacer and while Im no expert on this painting thing, I didnt put it any heavier on the seat pan than any other part. Actually the hood is what I covered heaviest and with the most coats and it came beautiful. Im very happy with them all. It took me a title longer but I wet sanded with 800 this weekend... very smooth now...other than the seat pan which is very shiny for now

What was your first coat of primer? Epoxy? 2K? I am no expert either, but I thought that primer surfacer was the final step before top coating. A good epoxy primer or 2K primer goes on the prepare metal or old paint, then after that has been sanded, you can apply a primer surfacer to give a nice smooth final surface for top coating.

Bob this was my only coat of primer. He asked if I was on bare metal, I told him no, 30 year old paint and he he gave me that stuff. It was a 2K primer surfacer

I'm going to take back what I said this morning. I was confusing primer/surfacer with primer/sealer.

Anyway, the 2K primer/surfacer JP202 is okay over solid, properly prepared old paint, and etched bare metal. The problem that you have there is one that I have not experienced.

I would take the fender to the paint store and ask them what they think.

Too late for that Bob. I have it stripped down to bare metal. Im getting a spray bomb or 2 of self etching primer and then covering it with sandable primer and painting it. Hoping for the best and damn the torpedoes...I have no time to fool around. I work late tonight, Masons Lodge tomorrow night, cut my parents grass Thursday after work and Friday my grass get whacked. Im out of options and out of time... I guess I'll be burning the midnight oil painting in the dark or in the basement. Dads 75th birthday is exactly one week away and this need to  be done for then. I dont know what else to do

You should be fine now that you're to the metal.  I think the urethane may have been the problem.  I don't know if WH used urethane or not from the factory for the original paint.  It will look good when you're done, just don't get into too much of a hurry or it may not work out the way you like.   :)

When I tell my wife that I just don't have time, she always replies with "what's wrong with all that time between midnight and 6 am. All you do is sleep?"  LOL

Good luck.
