M12 cyl head torque

Recommended Posts

persof

I removed the head from my 312-8, that has a Kohler Magnum 12HP engine, and I am now ready to reinstall the head with a new Kohler head gasket.  The Kohler manual says 25~30 ft lbs of torque.

A friend says torque to 5 ft lbs, then 10, then 15, then 20 and then 25???

I say say torque to 10 ft lbs, then 25, run till it’s hot, cool down an re-torque to 25 ft lbs.

Recommendations?

Thanks

Francis

Two steps is all that is needed.

If you use a metal gasket, ignore the instructions that say you do not need to retorque, you WILL have to retorque at least once.  If using the graphite soft gasket, just once.

If using the one off ebay that is from stens, I had to retorque 3 times.  It looked like a great gasket, and is holding up very well.

Depending on the dealer stock, you could have a metal or a graphite type.

25FT LBS shold be enough.

A metal will be hard, and have little divits on the surface.

The graphite will be very soft, and it will be a dark grey and smooth.

Recently picked up an early 90's Wheel Horse 212-5 with Onan E125v. Intake valve was sticky and it had a bent pushrod. Can anyone tell me of a source for a new head gasket and a push rod? I've looked online but the only gasket I found was a used one on ebay. Thanks.
