Need help Identifying engine in RJ35

Recommended Posts

jsp_333

From my limited knowledge of the RJ I bought last week I know the engine is either Kohler K-90 or Clinton 1200.

But which one is mine?

I've uploaded some pics but is there an identifier stamped anywhere on the engine?

Also, how do I determine whether to start looking for parts or just start looking for a whole new engine - either Kohler or Clinton?

John

The curved fins on the head suggests to me it's a Kohler K-90.

That would be a kohler k90. The 90's had the curved fins, but the 91's had straight fins.

That has the original, sought after muffler on it also.  Pull the plug, if the pulley turns freely...this could be a good engine.  You can look down the plug hole and see if the piston moves up and down.  You can look in the carb hole and see if the valves move like they should.  Drain the oil...that can tell you a few things.  If all that looks good, she will probably start if you have the carb.  The above is the place to start.  :)

Do a search for "K90" in this section...lots of good reading.  :)

Awesome, thanks guys.

The pulley turns freely with the plug in it but there is nothing like actually seeing the piston and valves moving up and down.

Oil is the great unknown at this point as I had trouble getting the steering wheel / hood off it to easily pull out engine.

Ya I've got the original carb and oil filled air filter.

Jake, noticed you've got a couple of "stamped frame" RJ35s

What does that mean, and what the significance?

I lifted mine up the other day and believe I saw 4 numbers stamped on the underside of the frame.

John, The stamped frame 35's are not really any more valuable or collectible than the other 35's, but there are less out there. They were made in late 55 and early 56. The only real difference is that the frames were made out a piece of stamped steel rather than the channel iron like yours has.  The numbers you saw on the bottom of your frame are probably just from the steel supplier, my 57 has some writing or numbers on the bottom too I believe. Here's a pic of one of the stamped frame tractors...its not complete in this picture, but it shows you the frame.

The K-90 head fins can be angled or curved.  The engine pictured is a Kohler.

Now how about thoughts on what's inside.

Pulled the head off on the weekend.

Pictured is what I found inside.

Worth saving? or too badly damaged

Also drained the oil - was pleasantly surprised to find at least  1/2 quart.
