520H No spark after sitting one week.

I have a 1996 520H.   I replaced the charging regulator about a month ago and has ran fine until this week.  I have replaced the relays also, but not with genuine replacment parts.  The wiring harness is a bit of a mess as someone has moved 2 of the fuses from the crap fuse holder.   I let it set for a week, and no spark!  turns over fine, one relay kicks in on run, another on start, cant tell about the third.  The coil doesnt show any physical damage, however the new regulator is already cracking a little.   oh, and the oil light is blinking.  seems odd that no spark after sitting,  even though everything else brakes after you turn it off.   Im not sure where to start?

I tested for a low oil pressure cut out by jumpering the + side of the coil to the plus side of the battery.   Cranked the engine over with the spark plug out and grounded, no spark, guess the low oil cutout is good.  Next test was to check the ignition module by using a volt meter.  I connected the + side of the volt meter to the - coil terminal (larger one) and grounded the other volt meter probe.  With the key in run, I rotated the flywheel and watched the volt meter jump from 12v to 1.5 volts which means the ignition module is good.  I tested the coil last with an ohms meter.  the top lugs on the coil produced a resistance of 3.60 ohms, however the the leads inside the spark wire holes produced no reading.  The book said it should be between 14,500-19,800 ohms and that if either were not in range to replace the coil.  Unless someone has anything to add, I guess im replacing the damn expensive coil!

Atleast you dont have to pull the flywheel off and change the module. What a pain in the dupa. I would change a coil any day over the module ,but on the plus side .You get to clean off them cooling fins when you do a module.

Look into a 12 volt harley coil in the 3 to 5 ohm rating. Many have done this with success. Both harleys and Onan fire both plugs at the same time. Much cheaper than the Onan. I believe Martin may have a part number for you if my memory serves me correctly.

    Good luck

Do the mod with the Harley coil. Martin posted it here -

I followed Martin's post and even bought the same coil from the same eBay seller.http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&vxp=mtr&item=301252503367 He had the best price. I found that I could use the original wires by positioning the coil so both wires reached it. I did have to remove the front wire from it's clip to give it more slack to reach the new coil.  BTW here is a perfect opportunity to say THANK YOU MARTIN for sharing your solution. You saved me a lot of money!

Experts - help please. I’m new to Wheel Horse Tractor life!

So - I’ve pulled out an inherited tractor and have decided to resurrect her. Unfortunately, no spark :/

I’m looking for help on diagnosing no spark.

      model - 417-8
      engine - Kohler KT17

Done thus far:  (aware that some have no implication on spark.)

      - new ignition switch
      - new battery
      - new starter
      - new ignition coil and wires w/ plugs
      - new condenser
      - new points
      - new starter solenoid
      - bypassed all switches except oil and seat.

      notes:

      idiot lights removed.

All fuses tested with Ohms as well as visual inspection  ..

coil tested w/ ohms as well

      all switches bypassed except:
-oil switch  ( don’t think it has any implications other than a visual indication for idiot lights. )
      -seat switch

ran a pos from batt direct to pos of coil - nothing; no spark.

      Electric is as follows:

      - Starter switch wired to solenoid
      - - solenoid to starter
      - - solenoid to batt

      - one wire from starter switch goes to engine ( I think this is for batt charge / flywheel)

      - I have two yellow wires, which are married up, that go to engine which have constant power; They power coil.  Comes from switch and seat.

Help - what the heck am I missing ?

Now that we are finding more uses for the 1990 520H with a KwikWay loader I am experiencing some power loss in the hydro after about a half hour to 45 minutes??????
      Ideas?

Selling my trusty WH520H.  ~880 hours (currently used for moving snow when needed so hours may rise) very solid machine, strong and hardworking.  20HP Onan, hydro transmission and hydraulic lift.  Has Matt's foot-pedal conversion for forward/reverse.  Included in the sale is a tall-chute snow blower and 60" mowing deck.  The blower is in excellent condition and is on the tractor currently.  The mowing deck has been a workhorse over the years.  No holes but could use some TLC, probably needs new spindles at some point and could use a couple spots touched up with welder also does NOT have any pulley covers/protectors (see photo).  Tractor has been an incredible tool, very solid and dependable and I'm certainly going to miss her when she's gone.

Recent maintenance: replaced the plugs this summer, fluids as needed (hydro has about 100 hours on fluid/filter; oil was done in the spring and has about 25 hours on it).  Battery is about 3 years old as are the tires, Terra Trac tires on the rear and turfs on the front.  The seat (with arm rests) isn't in great shape.  I've got a cover for the seat, never used.  It's never really bothered me but new seat cover is included in sale as are 4 hub caps, chains for the rear tires, and some misc spare parts (see photos).

I've owed this machine about 8 year and put ~350 hours on her.  She's not a show piece but could be restored.  Sheet metal is generally in shape, no rust however the hood does have a couple dings in it.

I'm only selling because I'm trying to help my son get a small lawn care business started and looking to move to a zero-turn.  The 60" deck is too large for our trailer, the mowing deck lacks pulley safety shields, and we'd like something that mows faster.  My only complaint with this machine is the top-speed (which isn't great when comparing to today's machines) otherwise she's a beast.  They don't make them like this anymore.
