As a follow-up to my post on an unexpected visitor, I went to look at the Wheel Horse mentioned yesterday.

Here are the particulars:

 

ID 73400, 314-8 Garden Tractor, 1995 (SN 5901397)

 

42" Deck - 78345, 42" Side Discharge Mower, 1995 (SN 5902095) - Some rust-through spots.

 

79350, 48" Snow/Dozer Blade, 300 Series Garden Tractors, 1995 (SN 5901686)

 

This one has not been used for 5 years, but has been kept in a shed. The seat is shot, and there is some rust, but not bad. The headlight trim is missing from one light, looks like one axle seal is leaking. The engine started right up and ran surprisingly good. No unusual noises, knocks or taps. The engine is an M14. Transmission shifted smoothly into all gears. Rubber is fair. The deck has some rust through spots but runs decently. The meter reads 952 hours.

 

The snow/dirt blade is missing the index pin and spring.

 

So, here is where I value your opinions. Having never owned anything newer than 1977, I did not know what to offer. Thanks for your input.

Giving that I'm not an expert on price and prices I've seen I'd say $500-$1000 given its overall condition.

Bob:  I just paid  $950 for this  1994  314-8 . 

 

It only has 500 hours and had a 42 side discharge mower I traded to my brother for the 42 rear recycler deck.   I did not get a snow/dozer plow with it.

 

Maybe these photos will help you come up with a price to make an offer.

 

I like they way it mows and operates!  I used my  1975 B-80 that last six years to mow my yard and I bought this to upgrade to only a 20 year old tractor!

I figure out what I think is the value by assessing the components separately first.

So..............

1) quiet mowing deck with holes......................$150

2) 48 plow with axle bracket............................$200

3) 314 tractor in fair shape, no attachments....$500

 

 I figure parted out separately you could get at least $850 for it all so I would offer $600 for the package.

PS.....if there is a plow there surely must be wheel weights or chains kickin around right??

Bob, my offer would be $600 also. Because the plow was included. Tractor and deck does need a tad of work. Did you pull the dip stick on trans and motor? Curious on that, if so were the fluids clean? Only asking cause its the first thing I do.

Tranny fluid was good. Just looked like a little condensation. Oil was a little dirty, but owner said it was not changed before putting it away for five years. No sign of engine oil leaks. No smoke.

He's asking $950.00. I told him that I was not interested at that price, buy I would make him a counter-offer after I has some time to do some research.

The 314 w-42 sd deck I got was rough from all sides,ran good ,but rough ,but I only gave $300 for it ,so I concur that $ 600 is in the ball park

Actually the first thing I checked was the dash. All the lights worked, the interlocks were all working, and nothing appears to have been bypassed or rewired.

Same here on the $600 Bob. Last Christmas Eve I paid $425 for the 314 Hydro you see listed below. It has about 550 hours on the clock. It came with a super nice 42" SD deck. I have a snow blade that I bought for $150 that is in very nice condition (probably because it does not snow much here). Add that together and its $575.

I think I paid $450 for the 414-8 that you see listed below. I'm guessing it had around 800 or less hours on it (no hour meter). It came with a 42" SD deck and a hitch for plows and such. Add the snow blade to it and again you are at $600.

If you can get this one you are looking at for less thats great! If not, well I'd say $600 is fair for everyone concerned.

Based on all the responses here, and having looked at other sales on other sites, the average price for a 314-8 with a deck and snow blade seems to be right in the $650.00 range. I can't see paying any more than that. Now on the other hand, he also has a nice "bathtub" cart that he says he won't part with. If he were to throw that into the equation it might make a difference.

Never make an offer first.  Ever make someone an offer and watch their eyes light up?  Definately make him set the price first and negotiate from there, just make sure your eyes don't light up if he says 400.00.  I bought a 312-8 and 42" deck, 48" blade and 36" tiller with the center pulleys and cover for 700.00 last month and the paint was original and shiny on every piece.  The original seat was like new, everything worked, and every piece was there.

950 is a pipe dream. The hrs. aren't exactly low, the seat is toast (at least 150 bucks for the correct seat) If you do need to replace the tires there is 300 right there. All of the attachments need work (blade missing some parts) and they are kinda crusty looking. I wouldn't offer 650 for it, especially if I don't NEED it.  I won't say its not worth 650 but I'd want a better deal than that to get me to pull the trigger. JMO.

I'm with Ken. It needs work. $650 is high given the condition. Plus the fact that he looked you up 20 years later. $500 tops in my opinion.

A year and a half ago I sold a 1994, 314-8 with 1100 hours, 48" deck,  a very tired single stage snowblower, chains for $1,300.  At the time I felt the price was too low.

Bob, any decision yet? The more I read, the more my original guess price is dropping.

Now I find myself in the 500. dollar range also. I cleaned my glasses and revisited the pictures.

Bob, I just reread this post and reread what Sparky wrote. I compared that with the prices that I see here in Western NY and I find myself agreeing with those prices. If I really wanted it, I would offer $700 just to get it. If I "just wanted" it and didn't care if he said no, I would lower my offer to $500. Like Van also said, $600 would be fair to all. I agree with that. I am not into screwing people over just to get the cheapest price for myself.

I believe I would offer $500. I paid $600 for mine with similar hours and no snow blade, but it was well maintained and the deck was smokin awesome! Even though you could part it out for more, as you know, the mowers are always worth more parted out than together. I would come up with the value based on what a nice example costs, then subtract the things the tractor needs in order to get it close to what then nice example is. Head light trim, seat, seal, time, rust etc.

 

On the plus side, I think it would clean up nicely, and if you have the time then it would be an easy project. I love my 1995 314-8!
