Can a kohler k181 with a starter generator be converted to recoil start? What parts do I need?

Yes it can be done.  Are you switching to a magneto ignition at the same time?

Yes I'm trying to make it so I wouldn't need a battery

You will need to check if your bearing plate behind the flywheel has mounting holes for the magneto, and whether the recoil start shroud will bolt to it.  If not, you will have to change the bearing plate.

As well as that, you will need a recoil start shroud, recoil unit, starter cup, flywheel, and magneto.

Yes this is possible. I converted my k181s from battery ignition to pull start. I like the simplicity. I had a donor k161 laying around that helped. Its a rather simple job. Just gotta source a pull start kohler for the parts. Make sure you swap the plug too. Trial and error got mine running. In the end it was sooo worth the work. New stators arent cheap. Which is why i did the conversion. As for the bearing plate, i believe i swapped those as well. everything else bolts right up. This was from a 161 off of a tiller.
