zach l 2 #1 Posted July 20, 2014 Can a kohler k181 with a starter generator be converted to recoil start? What parts do I need?
sorekiwi 761 #2 Posted July 21, 2014 Yes it can be done. Are you switching to a magneto ignition at the same time?
zach l 2 #3 Posted July 21, 2014 Yes I'm trying to make it so I wouldn't need a battery
sorekiwi 761 #4 Posted July 21, 2014 You will need to check if your bearing plate behind the flywheel has mounting holes for the magneto, and whether the recoil start shroud will bolt to it. If not, you will have to change the bearing plate. As well as that, you will need a recoil start shroud, recoil unit, starter cup, flywheel, and magneto. T McCool 287 #5 Posted July 28, 2014 Yes this is possible. I converted my k181s from battery ignition to pull start. I like the simplicity. I had a donor k161 laying around that helped. Its a rather simple job. Just gotta source a pull start kohler for the parts. Make sure you swap the plug too. Trial and error got mine running. In the end it was sooo worth the work. New stators arent cheap. Which is why i did the conversion. As for the bearing plate, i believe i swapped those as well. everything else bolts right up. This was from a 161 off of a tiller.
