Just couldn't resist!

Well I finally got a chance to spend some time down in the shop. Got both engines removed and all the parts from the original 160 that need to be transplanted over to the B60 removed.

Also got the replacement engine tins for the 16hp primed and painted. I'm gonna put the original 160 back together with the 8hp and put that up for sale. I decided to keep the existing transmission in the B60 but it leaks and needs a new axle seal. Just going to pull it apart, clean it out and replace all the seals while it's out.

Still moving forward started to pull off some of the smaller pieces to strip, prime and paint. Got a bunch of those done. Restored the dash and cleaned up the ignition switch, starter solenoid and voltage rectifier. Sanded and painted the muffler black with high heat paint. Engine tins are done and test fitted. Now to pull them off and degrease the engine and pain that too. Ordered all new seals and few of the main bearings for the transmission. They wont be here till later next week so that gives me time to pull it out and get it disassembled, cleaned out and ready to re-assemble.

Spent some time today in the shop. Got the engine degreased and primed with high temp primer. Finished all the pto parts. I stripped, polished and clear coated what I call the bail to give a little pop. I also polished the starter and clear coated that to add to the look of the engine. Also finished stripping, priming and painting a few other parts. Now to find some IH red high temp paint.

Looking good Jeff. I just found 2 cans of IH Red (Valspar) today and bought them. Let me know if you need them.

Slammer,

There is a thread somewhere here on Redsquare on how to redo your dash. It is basically wiping it down with grease and wax remover and using a black vinyl die spray and Elmers paint pen for the white. Make sure the Vinyl Die is really dry before using the paint pens. The trick with the paint pens is knowing how much paint to have on the tip before painting the very thin letters and lines. Too much paint and it will run down the side and onto the flat surface of the panel. You have to take your time and put a thin coat of white on and let it dry. Then add another thin coat and so on. after two or three passes with the pen the white will be nice and bold.

Steve I have plenty of regular IHRed, just need the High Temp version for the engine.

Actually found high temp IH Red paint this morning. So this afternoon I gave the engine it's coat of red paint. Hopefully Sunday I will be able to get the entire engine all back together and ready to drop in.

The engine is all back together with new fuel line and is ready to drop back in once the frame and all is re-painted. I think the engine was the hardest part to redo. The frame, steering etc. on the donor tractor is nice and clean with no rust so the sand, prime and paint should go quick. The lighting is terrible in the work shop so the color and the pictures didn't come out so well.

Hmmm....never seen the starter solenoid mounted on the side of the shroud like that. Is that a factory location?

Mike,

The holes are factory threaded inserts in the cover so I assume so but don't know for sure. That's where it was when I got it.

Between going to the Flea Market with SteveBo first thing this morning and getting the lawn done I was able to spend some more time in the shop and outside painting. I got the belt cover all smoothed, sanded, primed and painted along with the seat pan hat bracket. Removed the transmission and have it on the bench with the plug out draining out the old fluid. Knocked out the roll pin for the steering wheel and have it soaking with PB Blaster to make it easy to remove. It's a little rusty but not too bad. I actually order a NOS steering shaft and a NOS steering block along with the bronze bushing and front shaft bearing. I'm gonna replace the tie-rods too. I want the steering nice and tight like when it was new. Half of the transmission bearings and seals are here. The rest should be here by the end of this week. By then I should have the transmission all taken apart, cleaned, painted and ready for re-assembly. I will continue to tear down the tractor and clean and re-paint the rest of it in the mean time. Hopefully I should have everything ready to go back together in like 2 weeks.

Spent a few hours in the shop today pulled the transmission apart. Removed the old seals and bearings and cleaned out the cases. Most of the gears are in excellent shape with just 2 or 3 with slight wear on the edges. I received most of the replacement parts. I should be able to get the case with all the gears back together tomorrow and then just need a few more parts and I will be able to close it up and give a new coat of primer and paint.

I have funny feeling that this tractor may end up being driven around at a certain "big" event in a few weeks...... :ychain:

I got the bulk of the transmission put back together and decided to pull the pinion differential apart just to check inside. Well i'm gonna need to find at least one new (or in better shape!) axle and 2 if I can. The grove for the snap ring on the worst axle had widened so bad someone had put a second snap ring on it. The grove also got deeper. The snap rings where so loose you could almost pull them off. I can't believe I didn't lose a tire while driving the tractor around. The second axles snap ring is tight and will probably last but i'd still like to find a better set since i've gone this far.

In the mean time I have continued to remove more parts from the tractor and get them sanded, primed and painted. Actually ran out of the IHRed paint yesterday and the primer is getting low so off to the store this morning to get more.

Nice work so far Jeff, (like usual). :handgestures-thumbupright:

Could you just pin the axle instead of snap rings? :eusa-think:  Maybe drill it out for a roll pin in the proper place.

You know Chris I don't why they didn't do that. It would make sense. But Steve hooked me up as usual and we came up with 2 nice axles. They are in great shape with almost no wear. The parts transmission he gave me even had a few really nice gears that where better then mine so I swapped them out too. Rolled the carcass of the tractor outside and power washed any remaining grease off. Minus the transmission issue this is gonna be an easy restore because i'm starting out with such a clean tractor.

Today and this Sunday are going to be the only days I have to work on this for the next week. I have to work my 24 shift on Saturday then I have to to teach a dive class to 8 of our guys who want to join our Dive Team on the FD and thats Monday thru Friday of next week. This includes pool time and their open water dives. Crazy schedule. Then I have my 24 shift next Sunday so this will it for a while.

Today I was able to play a little catch up and stripped, primed and painted a bunch more parts. All I have left to do is what's in the pic below and then have to break down the tires and rims and redo the rims. The dive class will be over Monday so come Tuesday morning I should be able to finish whats left of the tractor. I got all my new parts in so with any luck i'll have most of it put back together by this weekend (hopefully!).
