Some springtime oil burning worries

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone!

So today, I changed the oil on both my c-105 and my 310-8. I have no idea what oil was in the c-105, but I did run 10w-30 in the 310 during the winter.  I figured for summer I would go by the book, and I got a 30W oil from wal-mart (i went and looked at the container and it is a non-detergent oil).  After changing the oil, they burn a significantly LARGE amount more of oil.  :banghead: They both still run fine, and at steady rpm's they don't burn any oil (at least visually), but when you throttle them up, on the rise to the set rpm, they blow out smoke, quite a bit, and then run fine when the settle at that rpm.  Neither did this before changing the oil.  Sometimes I would see a tiny puff of smoke, or nothing, and now I could almost say it is a cloud.   I am going to keep a eye on the oil levels, because I do not want to kill the motors, but what should I do? Should I change oils? Could it be because I snagged the cheapo walmart brand oil? Could it be the fact that it is non-detergent? I'm just rather stumped, as I have fresh oil in two machines, but don't want to hurt them, or waste new oil :snooty:  (but will if I should).

Any ideas anyone?

Blah, It's always something, right?   :ychain:

Use Lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer 1/4 to 1/2 of what ever the amount the engine holds and fill the rest with a good 30wt oil and you will be amazed by how much less oil will be used and by how much better the engine will sound I have a c-85 that I filled halfway with Lucas and rest with 30wt made huge difference

Dump the oil as soon as you get home.  The oil you bought at walmart is not of an acceptable quality if it says "non detergent" on the bottle.

Non detergent is acceptable to use only if it has a good API Service equal to or greater than listed in the Kohler manual.  Walmart does not sell such an oil in non detergent.  In fact you may have to try several independent parts houses to even find it.

In your engines being they are broke in and well used, you should be using a detergent oil like Kendall SAE30, Shell Rotella T1 SAE 30, or other brands.  The API service should be at least SG.  Any letter from SA thru SF should not be used anymore.

In addition, you may have it overfull, or the breathers may need servicing.

An to avoid a flame war, walmart does sell some good oil.  And their supertech line is very acceptable.  However the brand of "non detergent" SAE 30 oil is very poor.  It is not thermally stable at all, and will leave a ton of deposits on the bottom of the piston and in the ring lands of the piston, clogging the oil return capabilities.

Thanks, this is what I was mostly considering about and was concerned about.  I know oil have those API grades, but I honestly never checked to see if it was a proper grade (never really knew "the" proper grade to be honest) So i just thought that since it had the API thing it would be appropriate.  I will do this, because I was very leary about running them with this stuff in it just because of how drastic of a change it was. Thanks! I appreciate it.  Off to change the oil. :tools-wrench:

Look at the bright side, at least this oil is not going to waste.  It acted as a "flush" at least a little bit.

I used that Lucas stuff in my truck a couple of times. It's pretty good stuff! Idk if  I would run it in my tractor, only because it is super thick, but it is decent stuff!

Yeah, that's the truth!  :handgestures-thumbupright:  It just scared the hell outta me when I changed to clean oil and they started burning so much, right after.  I knew something was wrong!  I appreciate your help!

I'll be more conscious of the grade from now on!

I have been buying my oil for a while at TSC since its less expensive and comes in the two gallon container. I never had any issues with it bu I noticed after the first purchase that they have a couple of different SAE 30 types, one being adveretised as a Diesel oil the other one not. Labeling is nearly identical so they are kind of easy to switch. SAE ratings are quite different in them. I wonder if the Diesel oil is safe to use.

Diesel oil will have a CD, CE, CF on up classification. The 1st letter C is for compression ignition engines or diesels.

SD, SE, SF on up are for gasoline engines. S is for spark ignition gasoline engines.

Some older oils will have both on the same bottle.

Diesel oils are ok to use they just have a higher zinc content in them to reduce wear and and sae30 with a green on the labels is non detergent it it has a different color like gray or yellow it has detergents in it the gray label is a high detergent while any other color is normal to no detergents from what I have been informed.

TSC and buy sae 30 pennsoil

:text-yeahthat:  That's what I did.  I went with intention to buy and try out the shell rotella, but someone CLEANED out my local TSC of sae30 rotella. So, pennsoil was my next choice, and it works great!
