toddsanderson 23 #26 Posted June 26, 2014 Got the old Horse back and it is a big improvement!. The Engine now starts immediately and runs like a top. The body looks much better and the lights really light up the airplane you are moving. The video below is dark, but gives the idea of how it moves an airplane. Also, if anyone needs a good KT17 - the engine that was removed from this machine was fine. When it ran, it ran strong with a lot of power. The carburation was bad and I did not want to mess with it. I also wanted electronic ignition instead of points. I had the engine sold to a tractor pull guy, but the conversion took a little too long and he no longer wants it. Thanks, it really is a wonderful way to move airplanes. Very maneuverable and small. Here is a video of the unit running with the old engine. As you can see, it did not want to start and you usually had to run it with choke on to keep it running. In fact we even had an additional hydraulic connection to for another trailer that could be towed and lowered and raised for setting old wood boats down while on cradles. I still know where an ole Air horse is being used daily. Griffiths Wawasee Marina still uses theres. Many rebuilds but still working strong. Al Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
whfan74 2,015 #34 Posted June 28, 2014 First off I must say Todd is a very amazing gentleman. A long time ago we looked forward to taking on this project not knowing what lied ahead of us. Once the machine was on site we looked it over and made a game plan for how we would tackle the project. What happened next really messed up our timeline. After 43 years of marriage my mother decided she was done being married. For any of us that have been through this type of tragedy knows that this can be devastating. Dad had lost motivation and focus and now the daunting task of completing this became even tougher. Through all of this Todd was amazing! I still feel very embarrassed that the project took waaaaaay to long for us to complete. Dad did about 95% of the work himself as I was swamped at school and with my own family. I was able to go over to the barn and spend some very late nights to help get this completed. I was relieved once it was able to be delivered. It was the most challenging job that we have ever done as the reassembly process was pretty difficult. We are hopeful that Todd now has a machine that will last him a very long time. In hindsight we probably shouldn't have offered to take it on but we learned a lot about ourselves along the way. This machine was torn almost completely apart and powder coated. Terry Dennis hooked it up with some new custom decals. LED lights were placed in the hood, fenders, and floods put on the pan itself. Some old warn out parts were replaced with new OEM parts. Of course you can see the KT 17 was replaced with a brand new 18 hp Briggs Vanguard. All in all we are pleased but would have done some things differently. I want to thank Todd for the opportunity but most importantly want to thank him for his support and understanding. Martin 2,130 #35 Posted June 28, 2014 wow Scott, devastating news there........ just goes to show there is always other circumstances that come into play when we are trying to get these machines completed. sometimes theres many a reason behind lack of time to work on them. all most of the readers here see is the results of the work getting done, when that work slows or is non existent, rarely do we builders rarely lay it out on the line, the real reasons behind the time taken or lack of motivation to complete a project. personal life has a way of getting in the way.......
