Surprisingly well, I thought it might be heavy but it's actually quite light.

She's looking good Mark, that should be plenty of articulation on the front :D:handgestures-thumbup:

Looks great! So with the 4x4 engaged is there any binding when making turns?

Mike........

That's the last bit, I had to make everything else fit before committing to the final drive. There's an intermediate shaft to go ahead of the tranny that increases the drive ratio. The drive will be taken from the brake drum as it is a fixed 12:1 ratio and pretty handy.

The front axle can be disengaged and that linkage is already complete as 4WD only needs to be used when the rear wheels lose traction.

Even though I have measured and designed Ackerman steering, when the front axle is driven it will cause wind up, causing the front wheels to scrub and affect the turn radius.

It sits just right in the front, need larger tires in the back with the rear fenders raised and the footrest modified to make room.

I did that with my sons, I think I might lower the tranny by 2 inches and see how it goes...

Nice "upgrade"!  Id really like to see details on the drive and how your going to transmit power to the front.

As I'm home for a few days, managed a few hours earlier

IMG_3190_zps2837c6f4.jpg

Turning down the inside of the brake drum to 30mm

IMG_3191_zpsb3ff0ffb.jpg

Then turning down a sprocket to fit over the shaft.

IMG_3193_zpsff717fe0.jpg

The two together, the drum now fits on reversed with sprocket on the outside.

To complete the story, here's a snapshot of the intermediate gearbox calculator.

projectC4gearcalculatorv1_zpsbe831dae.jp

I just input the two axle gear ratios, tyre diameters and preferred pulley sizes. The calculator tells me what sprocket sizes I need to get the closest match.

Disastrous update...

Firstly turned a ring to fit inside the drum in order to lock the sprocket and align it.

IMG-20131128-00821_zps26679244.jpg

Then turned the inside of the drum to make it a tight fit.

Bradford-20131128-00822_zps36454d4a.jpg

Then welded the two together, they just about weld... The brake drum is very powdery and very interesting to turn

Bradford-20131128-00823_zps1e3859ff.jpg

Then pushed the two together and pushed the drum back onto the transmission to see the fit. Ouch!!! As I pushed it onto the shaft I trapped my thumb on the brake band and my nail has gone black!? :( not done that for a while...

Then the real disaster

Bradford-20131128-00824_zps5e0bcd6d.jpg

The sprocket should be an 08B and clearly it isn't! The chain rides high and the tooth width is too small. I wish I had noticed before I did the work boring the centre.

That's going to be it for now as I'm away for a few days.

I feel you pain...  :scared-eek:

smashed my thumb early August, trying to remove a stuck hitch pin.

Only recently started to feel, and look normal again.    :eusa-doh:

:text-goodpost:   I don't think I would change the tire size, just make up an adapter plate to elevate the rear two or three inches at the tranny mount. You already have the gearing worked out with the tires that are on it, going to bigger tires would change that. :text-coolphotos:

Tyre size is fixed, I like the look and as you say the gearing is sorted.

I will probably do the same to the rear as I doc with my sons. Weld a two inch piece on the bottom of the tranny mount and move the tranny down a few inches. It's easier than moving the fender, etc.

The last update was really annoying, fortunately the company that shipped accepted their mistake and sent the correct part this time.

That mean that the last mods to the brake drum had to be undone...

e1478deab89acd606439ad547827c8d2_zps83b5

Careful use of the grinder and a hammer! Note the casting broke instead of the weld.

The inside was cleaned up and the sprocket fits inside using 3 screws to hold it in place.

Finally getting me to where I should have been a week ago.

Bit cold and windy up north today... Painted the front wheels indoors, swmbo (the boss) not happy with the smell of paint and thinners.

Drive belt and bearings arrived today :)

Mock up to check the fit and general idea - final implementation will not be made from wood :P

Ahh Bless 'em , the Ladies don't like the smell of paint in the house, but Nail Polish and the Remover fumes are ok  :eusa-think:  .

Glad your back on track, looking good and the Black Thumb Nail is on the mend :handgestures-thumbupright: .
