416 adventures......

got some more work done on it today. wheel weights mounted. cleaned up the hydro and underneath with compressed air, blew out a whole bunch more grass and crap. started to put the seat pan on and decided to see how the paint on it would look with some rubbing compound and a polish. i think i will do the whole tractor. also the seat adjuster was seized so i worked on getting that sliding nice.....

amazing what a bit of polish can do....

seat adjusters seized bad, made it very difficult to get to the screws to remove from the seat. was full of grass and dirt....

post-4321-0-76378700-1382838052_thumb.jp

all cleaned up, free and smooth.

matt, ive been going back and forward about whether to pull this one apart and redo it or just clean it up as it sits. i thought by trying some cutting compound and polish on the seat pan that would help. the hood is my biggest problem area though, not sure if i can make that look good enough without a repaint. somebody in the past repainted part of it and looks terrible. if i can flatten the 'texture' of the repaint and blend it in, might try some wet sanding and see if i can get it looking good enough.

i really would like to get away without rebuilding this one as its in great mechanical condition already, and it would be nice to keep it as a 560 hour oem original.

van, yes its getting more like i want it... the shop is getting a little crowded in there, all horses except for a cub 682 and jd 314. the cub and jd could become trading material for the right horses, but i enjoy them for what they are even if they arent the right brand and/or color........

heres the gang.....

tackled the belt guard and foot rest. while i had the beltguard off, the bracket from the hood stand that holds the front of the guard near the pto needed bending in closer to the engine so the beltguard would sit in better around the hood stand. cleaned up one side of the hood stand as well, can see a big difference from the 'dash' of the hood stand to the right side now. i think im going back out to tackle the hood next, maybe.......

also need to get a cover plate for between the hoodstand and the seat pan, parts tree says they are still available new. part # 92-7294.

would like to get some footrest pads like they used on the 315-8 in the final years, would need to work out if they would fit ok.

well good news on the hood. still need to give it a good polish to get more shine on it but its now one color again........

i wet sanded the spray bomb paint off it and managed to not really break through the oem paint anywhere but the seam where the top meets the grill. theres a few scratches and marks on the top but i cant really see why somebody thought it necessary to paint part of the top. it was hard sanding up against the decals without rubbing the edge off the decal. still looks ok and im really happy the paint is reasonable underneath. i might try to machine polish it to get a better shine. I'm 99 % sure the factory used powder coat on these models as ive wet sanded powder before and it reacts different to wet coat paint. really hard to get a shine on it once you sand it, whatever grade paper you use. i finished up with 800 on this before using the rubbing compound. powder shouldnt ever be sanded out as it affects the surface of the paint. in this case i really didnt have a choice......

the hood is now really smooth and the depth of color is coming but its going to need more elbow grease to get it the same as the seat pan......

the inside turned out real nice, not rusty just really dirty, needed a good wash and scrub.......

hood back on tractor, looks a whole lot better already. i dont care if its perfect or not, as theres some chips and deep scratches and the paint got real thin around the join in the top of the hood, just wanted to get that crappy mismatched paint off of there......

well i got impatient waiting for the sea foam to do its job and tore into the carb tonight.

i read a few posts on here about just cleaning the carb on the engine and thought id see if that would help. heres one such post….

I've been inside nikki carbs used on performer engines before so i knew what i was going to see when i pulled the top off. the main running problem was at idle and mid range. well it had no idle at all so that was where i started looking. besides a whole bunch of junk in the bowl (which the sea foam wouldn't have got out in 1000 hours of running) the removable slow idle jet was blocked in the bottom 3 holes with junk. heres a pic of that brass jet and where it goes…...

post-4321-0-04422900-1383007057_thumb.jp

post-4321-0-81079900-1383007069_thumb.jp

then i blasted carb cleaner in all the passages and bowl, cleaning as much as possible. removed the mixture screw and cleaned through as well. removed the main jet plug and jacked up the back of the tractor to allow all the junk to flow out into a rag and container to stop making a mess all over the engine. re assembled the carb and primed it with gas ( using the mouth blow on the gas tank opening……. ) and she fired up and now runs nice and smooth…...

thanks  :rs:

didn't run it with the air cleaner and breather was a little noisy at idle……….

take a look at the video…... :)

and today we made even more progress..... :)  :)  :)

really happy right now, the hood turned out awesome considering the way it looked before........

i went and got a da polisher adapter for a electric drill, the meguiars one that has a foam pad and then used the ultimate compound liquid they recommend for polishing after wet sanding.....

i finished up with the mothers cleaner wax, still needs another go over the compounded finish.

heres the products i used.

post-4321-0-21464000-1383089697_thumb.jp

i highly recommend the da polisher as a economical alternative to a professional 6" da polisher (which I've been looking at purchasing for times just like this). i will probably get one later on, but for now I'm happy with the results the drill setup provides. i might even try wet sanding and polishing some powder coated red parts to see what results i get......

and heres a few of the hood........

post-4321-0-78546400-1383089850_thumb.jp

the 416 is really starting to look like a nice tractor now. i still have a few things to take care of and then just enjoy it. I'm happy i decided to try and just clean it up rather than pull it apart and repaint everything. the hood was my biggest area of concern, i didn't want to leave it looking like that. i will probably mask off the hood for the black and repaint that as it really looks bad against the shiny red!

Martin,

Very nice job indeed. I guess I will have to get another tractor so I can take my 416 out of service long enough to do some paint and decal work.

i got so worked up about steve painting that blade of his, i just knew i needed to redo the blade on this one now before winter. nothing better than red paint shining while pushing some snow. so i took it into work yesterday and blasted/powdercoated it. put it together this morning with mostly new hardware and mounted it on the 416. did a bit of driving around and then decided i needed to paint the black on the grill as its looking a little shabby.....

decal day today, went to visit Terry Dennis (vinyl guy) to come up with some slightly custom decals for the 416. spent most of the afternoon there, it was a good time coming up with ideas and putting them into some finished decals.

Terry is still working on the dash decals and the cover plate between the hood stand and seat. I'm really excited to see how those will look as we have come up with something a little different for the dash etc as well.....

heres the hood, hood stand and rear fender decals along with a matching one for the plow........

post-4321-0-95502300-1384055362_thumb.jp

first hood decal going on.

post-4321-0-39460400-1384055383_thumb.jp

hood back on the tractor. i would normally just put the decals on the hood without removing it, but with the plow on it was just easier to remove it. i had to replace the hood pivot and bushings anyway......

post-4321-0-03728700-1384055402_thumb.jp

and heres the rest.......

hood got treated with some new headlight bezels, nyliner bushings and a new hood pivot pin.

post-4321-0-48816000-1384055503_thumb.jp

and can't wait to fill this spot with the finished covers.......

took some pics today for the calendar thread....

i think I'm at a stage where except for some minor repair to the electrical and finishing off the dash decals, i can call this one done now. in the pics for the calendar i stole the seat off my c125, so maybe a new seat would be nice as its got some rips in it. would like to replace it with a oem seat exactly the same as the ripped one i have now.  its ready for snow duty this winter and I'm hoping for some big falls to give this one a good work out. the onan is running sweet, best running twin i have right now....

had the dash apart so we could scan the decal areas. while apart i pulled the circuit board for the warning lights at the molex connector. the connector half in the board end had definitely seen better days, one corner was burnt out and two wire terminals had corroded so bad they broke away from the block. so we needed to replace the block and put new terminals on at least two wires. i decided to re-terminal all the wires so we shouldn't have any issues down the road. (i did this at work in my lunch break, so thats why you see a powder hopper in the first pic.....)

post-4321-0-79495200-1384205611_thumb.jp

while getting the engine in running condition i knew both molex connectors were going to need some work so i purchased this kit.

post-4321-0-86301400-1384205642_thumb.jp

i could have just got a couple 9 pin molex connectors and terminals, but decided to get this as it has way more different pin count male and female blocks and terminals and wasn't really much more than just 2 or 3 9 pins and a few terminals. I'm sure they will get used for something.

post-4321-0-11781500-1384205626_thumb.jp

you need to have a special crimper for these terminals, which i picked up when making a new harness for the c160 here >  you will also need some side cutters, insulation strippers, plus the 9 terminal molex block to match the one you are replacing and 9 terminals (those came in the kit). a tool for removing the terminals from the block would be handy here as well, but i left mine at home and so i had to butcher the old burnt block as i cut the wires to keep them at the most length. the tool is definitely the easier way.....

post-4321-0-01751100-1384205660_thumb.jp

heres a pic of the tool from my c160 wiring thread......

post-4321-0-77871500-1360108253.jpg

need to get the block in the same position as the one you are replacing, notice some of the holes are 'keyed' with flats, not every one is round.

post-4321-0-30401400-1384205675_thumb.jp

i rotated the blocks so they are both the same and marked the same position on both blocks.

post-4321-0-71591900-1384205688_thumb.jp

i knew the green went in the corner terminal (which i now have marked) so that was the first wire position i started with. one by one each wire is cut, position it came from is noted and then a new terminal is crimped on and it gets inserted in the corresponding position in the new block. i left the wires as long as possible, cutting right at the old terminal, i already knew i had a little wire length to play with, but didn't want to push my luck so i shortened them only the slightest amount....

post-4321-0-42042700-1384205706_thumb.jp

heres how the terminals look, this is the 'male' side we are working on.......

post-4321-0-37533300-1384205719_thumb.jp

almost done.....

post-4321-0-65321200-1384205734_thumb.jp

one terminal gets two wires, so we need to make sure both wires get pushed in far enough to get a good connection, tight fit, but once its crimped almost the same size as one wire.

post-4321-0-85252300-1384205763_thumb.jp

all wires crimped with terminals and in the block in their right positions ( I hope so.....)

terry and i have been working on the dash decals the past week or so and we also came up with a new design for the other decals. all morning i have been preparing the 416 by removing the old dash decals and the last set of custom decals we did. i also decided that since they were all off that i would break out the da and give the paint some more depth and shine. that factory paint responded once more to some polish and i think its about as good as its ever going to get.

so stay tuned for some more custom decals from terry a little later on.......

heres the 416 all naked waiting for a new set of clothes.....
