I think your setting on the flat ledge in the cup

I checked height between the two parts

 

I think your bottoming out on the top cover on the flat in the lower cup where the fliter screen is

Either way...this modification worked...  

the oil bath is full, and the engine is running fine.

if you ever make another one just don't drill the hole as big in the top cover so the pipe does not come thru it

Agreed, that's the ticket here. I had to take the chance though, and figure it out as I went...as I had no reference on hand to work from. 

Suppose I could tack in a couple fender washers to the underside of the lid to prevent this tube from coming up through the cap.    

Next one will be even better...now that I know. Thanks again for your help Brian.

I'm going to do the red one I took pictures of

going to put a 1 1/8" dia. hole in top cover and spot weld a 1 3/16" freeze plug in the bottom cup I will post some pictures when I

get it done

Heres my downdraft to updraft air cleaner conversion

top has 1 1/8" dia hole

Bottom has a 1 3/16" freeze plug (Dorman #555-086) with 9/32" dia hole on center

freeze plug is a light press fit in air tube

Just curious what years/models were the oil bath filters installed on? 

 

Was it limited to engine type? Kohler vs Clinton?

55 Clinton 1200's and 55/56/57/58/59 kohler k90/91's

also the larger kohler motors in in some of the early tractors 953 and some others
