My New 401.

Hey all,

Picked up another 401 last night. This one came from a facebook tractor group. The guy wanted to part it out but luckily I stopped him. It was complete other than a engine, foot rests, and fenders. Its in really nice shape too! The previous owner said it had been repainted a couple times in the past, but it looks like they used close to the correct color. It has a nice mower deck and snow plow too. When I told the guy I would take it he didn't tell me it had a belt guard, he showed up the the tractor and it had an original belt guard! That was a big plus. I probably would of paid more for the tractor if I had known it had the guard. It is the narrower style guard like the 551 had but I will still use it and put it on. I spent about an hr this morning and had the tractor driving around the yard. I still have to hook up the throttle cables and put the belt guard on. But other than that it is probably done. I may end up painting the wheels, and I am thinking about repainting the engine blue. The transmission is in great shape, it still has a nice rubber boot on it. I don't plan to paint this tractor, I will keep it the way it is, I really have missed my 401 before I redid it, and having the snow plow like mine did was a real plus. I wouldn't be surprised if this one ends up with duals in the future.  Here are pictures of it when I got it last night, and after I got it going.

The hitch is welded to the transmission! Not sure how I will fix that!

Nice score Jake. I'd probably wet sand it with some fine paper add a decal for the one that is missing and then clear coat it with a matte finish and call it done. You might even find some original red tins for it....

Tom.

Nice little 401 Jake! I love these little round hoods, it's great you got a deck and snow plow with it too.

Have fun with it!

Guy, we are gonna hafta rename you the Tractor King. You must be in a Wheel Horse honey whole, envy, envy!!

Hey don't ya think that is a neat mod** on the mower deck, have been perusing that idea for some time and pacer Bill

did a similar mod to his 1054 deck.

**I say mod but that may be a factory kit, at any rate I've a need to fig out how to square the wheel to the round of the deck.

The flat thinner bar looks like deck links which are usually curved at one end, and the bigger one looks like a part to go into sleeve hitch for trailer ball, just a wild guess!

Nice score Jake!

The long thinner link I have no idea what it is... the shorter fatter one looks to be a front sickle bar lift link.

As of the rear hitch, cut it off with a die-grinder, clean it all up and rebiult the tranny.
