Now that's some scale model of a battle ship

Probably showing my age here but I used to love building airfix kits as a lad. It's probably how many of us older ones learned to read and work from quite complex exploded diagrams.

During my time I must have built and painted all the WW2 aircraft and WW2 ships that were available at the time which certainly included HMS Hood and the Bismark. I can't remember if the Admiral Graf Spee was available then but take a look at this guy's model making skills. It's worth a look even if you're not into ships or making scale models.

Looks as if cannon fodder is 303 British. You guys :UK:  did a great job gettin' her with the midget subs, woops, wrong battleship (Tirpitz). South American neutrality prevented a BATTLE death, she was scuttled. Check the no. on starboard side...Me109E, was that her no. or ref to the plane?

That guy did one heck of a job, wow!

Thanks for sharing this Richard - I just love the size of those models but way beyond my pocket I guess.

I did get intersted in having a go at building a RC plane after watching an episode of The Avengers (Steed & Emma Peel). The kit I was bought as an Xmas present turned out to be a glider which to be honest I struggled to find the patience to build in balsawood not at all like Airfix kits. What really killed it was finding out how much the RC kit to go in it was going to cost which was way beyond my means.

As we're much the same age you may remember the Avengers episode in question - here's a link to the preview of Series 4 : Two's a Crowd (1965)

As I recall the Lancaster model flies later in the episode. Must watch the whole episode sometime to see if my memory is correct.

Andy , I find it quite spooky when I read about your reflections of your life experiences. It's as if we unknowingly lived a parallel life back then !.

I went from Plastic Kits to Control Line, Free Flight & R/C Gliders to R/C power........crashed a few. Only sold all my I/C Engines a year or so ago, which I had stored for 40 years

Don't tell me that you also kept Newts and Snakes when you were a kid! .

Yep, remember both of the Avengers Series. The Lanc Model nbr in that episode 'AJ-G' was based on 617 sqdrn at Scampton. G- George was Guy Gibson's Ride.

My Dad was an Engine/Airframe Cpl Fitter in 11 Group Fighter Command 1939-41 on Spits and Hurricanes, Then in Bomber Command from 1941-46 on Lancs and Mosquitos.

Specialised in Merlins. His CAA Licence issued post war was serial nbr 12345 !.

Anything with wings and flies is a winner with me.. especially those 4 A/craft and all their versions

Regards

I used to build rc planes for about ten years when my son was in his teens,it petered out when girls and cars came along. He is now 35 and and started to fly again. His favorate was a Wot4 with an Enya 60 4c engine .The wing folded in half when it had a.61 two stroke in it.

The technology has moved on a lot with new rc gear that selects its own channel . Telemetry sent back from the plane. Cameras in the plane that sends the view back live to goggles so you can be flying the plane from the pilots view. Needs a lookout with you so you don't fly off to far.

Started off building planes as a kid, but got bit by the car bug at some point.

Of course, I do still have those AMC specific kits squirreled away.   :handgestures-thumbsup:
