I think you'll have to take the head off and measure bore and stroke. They both have 9 head bolts and the tin can be swapped so there will be no clues there that you can trust.

301 standard bore is 3 3/8" and the 321 standard bore is 3 1/2" the stroke is the same 3 1/4".

some 301's have that mark some dont,,,,,,you definatly want to measure the bore and the stroke. i just bought a 301 from a guy for my cub and it doesnt have any marks on it that say 301 except the flywheel shroud. and if you have k301 on the flywheel shroud it should be a 12 horse kohler, if im not wrong the 14 horse shroud will not fit the 12 horse engine.

Some 10hp series Kohlers have the K301 casting number on the block.

That does not make it a 12hp. Just means the block has enough "meat" to be bored to 12hp bore.

Ditto I have a 10 HP with K301 on the PTO side
