Finally getting my tiller set up, belt ?

I am attaching a 7-1251 tiller to a C-175. I'm using the original older style spring loaded flat idler on the tiller, and the older style mid mount idler on the mid tach-a-matic. the '73 7-1251 tiller calls for a #1599 V-belt that is 138" long, but the '80's tillers call for the #110265 V-belt that is 141" long. The tillers seem to be mechanically the same so what changes cause the belt length to differ by three inches? If its the tractors length then which belt to use? Has anyone married this tiller tractor combo together before and if so can you help me out?

here are some pics;

got the '73 7-1251 as a rusted basket case.

I had to E-tank everything, new bearings and seals, new gasket, prime and paint.

the tiller never saw much use. the tines are still full blade. the parts cleaned up nice in the E-tank, I used rustoleum regal red with hardener.

filled the pitting on the hood and finish sanded to 400grit.

I had to borrow a buddy's mid idler for a pattern. decided to make three while I was at it. cant ever find em when you need em.

needed a rear rock shaft so with illustrations from parts tree and pics from 312hydro this is what I came up with. I used a cable left over from a bay window installation. It has a threaded end put through a trunion, and clevis and clamps on the front rock shaft.

poor old worker (C-175 eight) is gonna learn a new trick, better clean her inerds quick while its apart, need a shifter boot too. seat switch wires were through the lift cable tube.

almost hate to attach it. hmmm, don't want to put a hood plate lift point on this model. decission time.

now if only i had a belt. what size should i get?  gonna be good to get some seat time tilling.

if anyone thinks I should use this flat pulley on the tiller end instead of the original to get a belt to fit, let me know.

Very nice job on the Tiller.

 

Just thinking out loud here, but I think it has to do with frame length on the tractor. I know there are two holes for the idler set up near the mule drive, and different tractors use different holes. I have a tiller for my 461, but have no idea how long the belt is.

Great job restoring that tiller!

The difference in belt length could be because of the engine being mounted on the vibration isolation plate on the later model tractors. Or, it may have to do with where the tension spring attaches for the mid mount idler.

I like the push pin addition on the rockshafts you made up for the back tiller lifting.    I have two different rockshafts for the early 70's model tractors and the more recent version like you have with the notches for the C models, etc.    I too am going to make a few more of these rockshafts and the pushpins are a lot better than e rings in my opinion as you may need top move the rockshaft when working on your tractor.

Thanks for the nice remarks guys. i'm a decal junkie so those are coming, soon as source some. nope you've not been much help though. LOL  hope someone that has done this same setup chimes in. trial and error works ok until it starts gettin expensive and belts aren't cheap.

The belt length was addressed in this service bulletin in 1980

Tiller 36" 1973-1974 7-1251 Belt # 1599 may be too short Use belt # 103635 which has been replaced by # 110265

The tractors with twin cylinder engines also used this longer belt.

The belt length change shows up in the parts lists between 07-36TL01 (1980-1982) and 07-36TL02 (1983-1985)

Think these years are different than what Toro lists and don't recall how I figured that out.

thanks Garry, that helps me a lot, guess i'll be getting the longer 141" 110265 V-belt. thanks all for  the nice remarks on the tiller. I enjoy restoring rusty old stuff. just cant wait to get out and use it.

Very Nice! I like the clips on the rock shaft too. You sure made that tiller too nice to use.  So, is that about 2 days work? You make it look easy.

Rich, thanks for the reply, I have about 30 hrs in the tiller resto. over three months. not counting E-tank time, and paint dry time. I wish I was that fast. I work it in around other projects.

Beautiful job on the restore. Need to get working on mine but the snow is making me think winter yet. Spring will be here before I know it and mine will not be shiney and all redone until after spring tilling is done.
