i have a 189 312-8 and am trying to use a 1979 96-42st01 snowblower . I used the blower on a c 160 last year.When I go to hook up the belt it seems to short . will this combination work .

It should work and fit fine. Is the belt routed correctly?

AS best I can tell the belt is routed correctly and I have the right size belt. Ive spent alot of time trying to puzzle this out. Belt is a 5/8 by 69 is this correct?

Yep, physically they are the exact same sized machines with the same distances from PTO to any attachments.

I am having the same problem bought a used single stage no model # on blower but it came off of a c-160  tried to put on my 416-h used the same picture posted to compare routing . Barely touches the pto  pulley out side edge than tried to put it on my 312-8 than picked up a toro 5/8 69 turns out same thing just abut touches the pto pulley ?

If you are standing on the right side looking at the sides of the idler pulleys that idler assembly must be rotated clockwise against the spring pressure a long ways to get the belt on. I use a bar or piece of wood to pry it around far enough to slip the belt on the flat idler last.
