Wheel-N-It Finally Scores a Black Hood!

Recommended Posts

Wheel-N-It

OK, just when I thought I had a nice little manageable number of LAGT's, I get a phone call...........

It's my friend Keith who works for a gentleman who was once a Wheel Horse Dealer before the TORO days.

Anyway, this man has a 1984 C125 8speed for sale again. I say again because he sold it new ( July 10, 1984 )to the original owner who is now deceased, and this is why it is for sale again.

The C125 had been sitting under in a shed for a couple of years. The K301 AS had to have a new fuel pump, but it was now running and awaiting a new owner.

Well, since becoming a member here I have grown fond of the Blackhoods, but only the ones with the late model rear fenders made out of metal. OK this one has that, so that means I need to go look at it, but I'm not going to buy it. I even drove my car to see it so that I could not bring it home as I was certainly not going to buy it no matter how much I liked it or how much it liked me................. Right*

OK, I bought it, and here is a pic;

I hope you guys like it. Is there anything about a Blackhood that I should be aware of? My experince with Wheel Horses is limited to 300 and 400 series tractors. This one definetly is a keeper, and I will probably remove the SD mower, and put a Rear Discharge Deck in its place.

Sorry about the poor quality picture, the good ones were too big to load. It really does look pretty good in real life.

yep, gotta say i really like those blackhood tractors as well. my c125 8 has really grown on me........

and i have to agree that they definitely look a whole lot better with a steel fender, either the later one like you have or the c1x1 series.....

Congrats on the score!

I appreciate your attempts at self control. Too bad it didn't work!

I have a C-165 black hood I'm restoring/fixing currently.

The only things I can think of with these black hoods is the Hi/Lo shifters.

If someone tried to shift on the fly, the fork for that is delicate and can break!

Check the condition of the rubber motor mounts too. If the motor jumps around too much,

You may need to replace them.

Also if you want to add a rear lift you should have a rock shaft over the tranny.

Looking forward to more pictures!

Joe

Actually yes Bill. After I can come up with the money to purchase a metal equipment carport style building, I want to close in the side of my garage where the Mahindra 4025 lives. Then I cankeep the LAGT's there. I need a little more money first though :)

Jay, I think you are right! This is the first Black Hood I can remember seeing in NC. Surely there must have been more sold than just this one. Anyway, I'm happy it found it's way to me. Of course you are welcome to take it to your house to play with for a while. I'm sure Jen won't mind you bringing home a "Loaner" :)

Ken B, I need to tell you this was the last Wheel Horse for sale in North Carolina. I guess you guys will have to look elsewhere :laughing-rolling:

Ya got an 8 speed so you don't have too many problems to worry about, Hydro's have a few more issues. For the most part they are a 300/400 series but have a much stronger hood stand and upper steering wheel mount.

In my opinion these were the best tractors they ever made!

good looks - check

simple - check

big enough even for big guys(like me) to not rub their belly on the steering wheel - check

no complicated electronics - check

tough as hell - check

limited turning radius so it feels like a bigger tractor - check

red and black - check

good headlights - check

Kohler engine - check

Loud enough to make the neighbors MTD tremble in fear - check

looks mean and nasty - double check

:handgestures-thumbupright: :handgestures-thumbupright: :handgestures-thumbupright: :handgestures-thumbupright: :handgestures-thumbupright: :handgestures-thumbupright:

I do like the look of the plastic fenders but finally took mine off in favor of steel for durability

OK so we just visiting an old friend. Right?

Spill your guts! Why did you take a bag of apples for your neighborly visit?

You weren't buyin'. Right?

Did you tell Mom, "The old Stallion followed me home! He loves me, I was nice!"

WHA (Wheel Horse Addiction) made you stretch the truth? Right!

I'm addin' your MOS to my list of "stories", now giddy-up Horsey. :-):-) :-)

Every time i see one of these i want one that much more. I got a call about a month ago with someone who had one but didn't have the room at the time. Its now gone but i would still love to find one of these to use as a solid yard machine. Very nice score!

Jay amd Rich, sorry to be making you wait on the pics of the latest find. I have been too busy to pick up the C125. I am hoping to go get it this Saturday. All the getting ready for Christmas, and all the end of the year work with a couple of organizations I am active in has really taken up a big chunk of my time. Plus I have a full time job too. I am looking forward to getting the C125 home, and getting it cleaned up and serviced. Also excited about putting the rear discharge deck on it. I know that means I will have to go out and buy a lawn sweeper. One thing really does lead to another with these little Lawn and Garden Tractors................................:)

Small Update, got the C125 home tonight. Unloaded it off the trailer and pushed it in the shop. I'm posting this pic, nothing special, still got all the dirt on it from years back. I sure will be glad to get my Son-in-Law's Wheel Horse to it's new barn so I can have some room to work on this one. I really need to build an addition to the shop to hold all these LAGT's.

Once again, sorry bout the poor quality. Santa may be bringing me a new upgraded phone next week. If he does, I should be posting some better pics then.

Do not let a flattering woman coax and wheedle you and deceive you; she is after your barn.

Wheel-N-It

Today was a great day. I spent part of the day working on the C125. First I put in fresh gas and got the engine running. My friend Keith had rebuilt the fuel pump right before I bought the Wheel Horse, but the run time on the engine was very little. So after putting in the fresh gas and giving it a little coaxing with either and a fully charged battery the K301 came to life. Boy was I ever surprised how well it runs! No smoke, No Knocks, No funny stuff going on witht the carb and govenor, No misfiring. It just runs strong and quiet. I let it run for about 30 minutes, then drained out all the old oil, and refilled the crankcase with Castrol GTX High Mileage and MMO. You who know me , know I am a Lubrication Engineers motor oil guy, so the GTX is in there only temporarily to finish flushing out any old junk that may be in the crankcase from years back. I don't want to waste any LE for just a few hours run time. Now the engine starts very easily, and runs out nicely. Then I greased everything with a fitting, and sprayed WD40 with lithium grease into all the areas that moved like the steering gear, and tie rods. Then WD40 with silicone into the throttle and choke cables, and down the steering tube. The tractor steers almost effortlessly now.

The lights work, and the amp meter works. The transmission is quiet. The PTO spins smoothly and quiet, but I will pull it off and grease the bearing with some LE chassis grease. The tires hold air! ( Unlike the tires on the 416-8 I just bought). The mowing deck is very quiet, but I removed it because the rear discharge deck will be used on this tractor. The parking brake actually works, and holds the tractor in place on a hill just like it should.

The tractor could look as good as it runs and steers if it had only been kept in a garage instead of a shed. I am not complaining about how it looks, but It could use a paint job. But hey, its a 1984 Wheel Horse LAGT so I can't expect it's PO to be as particular as some of us are. Here is some pics after wiping it down with some "Simple Green"

What do you think?
