Pick your top 4!

Recommended Posts

Kevbo

Hi everyone! As some of you may know, I am relatively new to the forum since I bought my 414-8 about three weeks ago. This forum has been extremely helpful and motivating and has encouarged me to really look into acquiring at least up to six Wheel Horses for my collection. Someday I would love to learn how to refurbish an old Wheel Horse as well! :handgestures-fingerscrossed:

Anywho, I had downloaded the Wheel Horse Tractor Master Model List last night and highlighted all the ones that I would possibly look into finding someday. Here are my highlighted horses

If you could hand pick four from the following list to add to my collection which ones would you add?

MODEL

701

702

953

1054

1055

1056

1267

Commando 8

Commando V8

Raider 12 (Which year? 68,69,70,71,72,73,74?)

Raider 14

Commando 800 (72,73?)

B-80 (74,75,76,77?)

B-100 (76,77?)

C-160 (74,76,77?)

C-161 (75,78,79?)

C-175 Twin (80,81,82?)

416-8 (85,86,87,88,89,90,91,92,93,94,95,96,97,98?)

417-8 (85,86?)

418-8

520-8

*Obviously if any lower HP models within the above series would become available at a decent price I would go for it, but the above would be my ideal HP :handgestures-thumbsup:

I'm excited to hear which ones you guys would select! Thank you and I hope everyone is having a relaxing weekend!!

I have to agree with Sparky, 701 and 702. But for working I love my two 417A's so for my other two picks would be 85 and 86 417-8's Great power with much better fuel economy the a 520.

Find yourself a round hood or a C series. The 702 is a good choice, they are capable of doing some work and they made quite a bit of them. Do you plan on going to the BIG SHOW in Pa. in 2013?

well out of those 4. My choices would be..

701 or 702, both are nice tractors

953 or 1054, there's something just about the look of those that has made me always want one

1267, a nice worker

c160 or c161, the ultimate worker

I'm just going to rate the four I currently own and use.

Why I'm rating my four, in any particular order, is a mystery to me. I'll attempt a brief explanation (I think).

'73 12 hp "No Name" - Automatic, Electric PTO - Surprised how this little guy performs, never thought an automatic would "work" but it does. This is also my first experience with an electric PTO. I do like the 'lectric PTO. Lazy fun.

'68 Raider 12 - Traditional "Machine" - Does the job, engineered, another performing "tractor." Raider was only a six-speed(?), poor thing (I'm sobbing, sorry). Gotta love this machine too!

'85 416-8 - Kohler - WH worker for sure however, not impressed with TORO's dash and steering column design. Works but, disappointed in the "newer" horse. I do like the sealed beam headlights though.

'88 414-8 - Kohler Magnum - Ditto the 416-8 design change "flaws." Minor design "upgrades" are awful. Can see the end of WH with these new "engineers."

Owned some old Bolens, wow! what steering columns! Cast!

My first Red Stallions (30-40 years ago) were pull starts, from the front. Shame watchin' the downgrading of WH "tractors" since TORO started backpedaling.

I chuckle within when watching buyers mulling over designs at the BIG box outlets.

Most don't have a clue. What are they purchasing? Junque!

Craig, is that the 702 that you stripped the hood down on? That 702 is looking pretty good if it is! The 520 rims and tires look pretty cool on there with the fenders and tool box removed.

From Tankman;

" '85 416-8 - Kohler - WH worker for sure however, not impressed with TORO's dash and steering column design. Works but, disappointed in the "newer" horse. I do like the sealed beam headlights though."

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that Toro didn't aquire Wheel Horse until August of 1986. I find it incredible that their engineers had any input into an '85s redesign.

I realize that it is very fashionable to blame any change which people didn't like on Toro, but it hardly seems fair to blame them for things that happened before they took over.

Not sure when TORO took over but, I know the '88 414-8 has the same steering shaft/dash panel design. Regardless of who.......that part of the Horse is for the birds.

"In mid-August 1986, Wheel Horse was sold off from Munn and purchased for $8 million by Toro. Tractors were built under the Toro banner for the next two decades. Under their new owner, economically priced Wheel Horse tractors shared the same pressed-steel frames, attachments, and other parts used in bargain-built Toro family equipment. In fact, Even larger garden and compact tractors were "cookie cutter" units identical in construction to New Holland models built under contract by Toro. The Wheel Horse name was eliminated from production after 2007."

Yep, same tractor here too Ken, just hanging different parts on it, in an effort to decide which way I'm gonna take it.

In the meantime, I'm having fun with my options. :handgestures-thumbsup:
