Difference in collecters and collections.

Recommended Posts

tractornut86

I post on here once and awhile and post some pictures but i hardly get a response from anyone. Is there anyone on here that is actually interrested in the older "rare" tractors? I posted a picture of a 1946 Pond lever steer which is the grand daddy of all other Wheel Horse tractors and I think got like 5 or so comments, and then some random person posts a picture of like a 300 series and it gets like 30 replys. In the garage there is the 46 lever steer, (2) 55 ride away seniors, (8) 55-57 rj35s, (2) pond walkers, (3) rj58s and a 401 but people look past those and would rather look at a Raider 10 or a C120 or some newer tractor. I dont wanna seem like a prick in nice terms but i dont see what people see in the newer tractors. Im not saying they arent nice tractors or nice to have but i believe the older tractors are looked over. Im only 26 years old and i take pride in my tractors and enjoy the old hard to find tractors but it seems like no one seems to care about them anymore. I was reading the posts about wheel horses vs other brands and it kinda got the idea to post this. What im looking for is feedback i guess of why do the newer tractors get so much attention?

I would guess that maybe 10% of members here are actual collectors so not too many people have experience with the rare ones. Many more people own a 300 series or a C series type tractor so they can relate to it more, thus answer and/or ask more questions about it.

Also certain or longtime members know more members here that they have dealt with or are friendly with and a bunch of them will respond to each other's posts.

I would bet at any tractor show they will walk right by the newer stuff to check out your very nice collection!

Just a guess but that's the way I see it There's no rhyme, reason or conspiracy here

Sounds like you have a VERY nice set of tractors. The members here dearly love the old school rides as well as the newer iron. They are a very friendly and kind bunch that will help get a tractor and parts shipped overseas to another member, even if it costs them a little. That is a true friend. However, it can take awhile for others to warm up to you, regardless of what you own. It's all how they percieve you thru what you write. Your post comes off as you want attention, true or not that's what I read into it. I come off abbrasive and cocky unintentinaly(?) and am/have gone thru the same thing. The whole internet poser thing is in play. Relax, comment on things that really interest you and hang in the chat room every now and then and everyone will get to know you. Several are offering to help me get a tractor for my son as I write this.

Partner, I like em' all, so if you post pics of them I promise to enjoy what you share with us.

I apologize for maybe not commenting, but I am just not familiar with the old stuff. Also I am more partial to the C, 300, 400, and 500 series WH's because they are the smallest size LAGT I can operate comfortable for a long period of time due to my height and weight. But please don't stop posting your pics. I might one day have to have one of those older tractors because of a picture you post here :)

I post on here once and awhile and post some pictures but i hardly get a response from anyone.

You have started 9 topics and have received 73 replies in total at this time (not including this topic). I don't think thats so bad.

A couple were in the "Other Brands" section. Since this is a Wheel Horse site I bet some guys don't bother looking at that category.

Well it may seem as a attention getter but i am looking at all the older tractors and just not what i post. I know of others who post and they get nothing on their post. I know of several older tractor collecters that have either left this site or just wont post anything because all the post and pictures are always of newer stuff or it seems like no one is interrested in what they post. My brother took the 46 lever to a show and one of the wheel horse "collecter" walked pasted it and his son asked what it was and he told him it was a Speedex and walked on. My brother and i got a good laugh out of it.

You have an amazing collection of tractors! I really only care for the roundhoods but I have a few squarehoods because they came to me, I didn't come to them. There are more people into those because people want to still use them. When you use them ,you can't really use a pond or a roundhood. I still use some of my suburbans but there's not much there capable of. We are collectors and have 6 rj35's, about 8 rj58's about 6 suburbans, and about 25 other newer tractors and a couple of off brands.

You just can't post a picture and expect to get hundreds of replies. It's all in the story. While I am not sure exactly what topic you're referencing, but I looked at a couple that you stated and you have one sentence with 1 or 2 pictures. Give the members something to discuss and I am certain you'll get more replies!

Pat on the back for bein 20 years younger than me and liking the older horses... I like the Round hoods but I'll probably never own one, I didn't have the association with one, so there is no drive in me to own one, BUT I sure love looking at the pics of them the members post, the barn finds, the workers, the Rat Rods, the ones that look factory fresh. The lever steer ones really have me intreagued!! Steer with a stick.. Would love to drive one to get the feel!! So I am biased on the newer models I guess, I have a 416-8, 8-25 ( my go-kart ) and my very first tractor a 1980 simplicity 3110, I just can't let her go.... But I want 2 more non WH products, a cub 149 and a 70's MF 7 , for my collection. The Big picture includes a trailor to haul my collection to WH shows and mingle with other folks who has our passion for our 2 and 4 wheeled friends!! Red Square is the best web site hands down.... Everyone is so nice and helpful.

i for one enjoy your posts on the old stuff. there are a lot of members who only mess with pre 1960 tractors. i love them all! i have horses from a rj-59 to a late 520 and around 20 in between. i love other old tractors, i have a baird-beaver tiller steer, 3 massey-harrises & a whole bunch more. keep posting we read them all! But seriously,I saw the pic of your lever steer in your other post and you are fortunate to own one. They sure don't grow on trees like "300"s so to see one at a show would be neat. I wouldn't know what one was if it wasn't for collectors like yourself who can find and restore them.Don't get discouraged and stop sharing your collection and frankly,I'd like to see more of the rare ones. It's really interesting to me to see the progression through the series of horses as improvements or needs were met in the designs.

i enjoy looking at the older stuff more than new. it has a lot more style(like round hoods) or built like a rock and made to work like your lever steer. the pond that you own help start the hobby we are all additiced to but like stated before more people can relate to newer tractors because we all own them. i would love a lever steer but i dont know what i would do with it. i own two round hoods and a few newer tractors and to me the best part of the hobby is all the cool attachments and getting to use them. everyone is different the people on here are very nice and im sure allmost if not everyone on here thinks your tractor is cool. i looked at it and thought it was awsome i just didnt post it sorry

All together there is 70 some tractors all together. Not all are mine some are my brothers and some mine but we just kinda claim each others but we have the Wheel horses and there is a 312-8 to mow with and the girlfriend has a 857 but there is Bantams, Shaw-du-alls, Hillers, Garden Masters, Panzers, Wildcats, Brownies, Economys (power king), Sears Handiman, Speedexs, Vantrac(made in 1951 in media, ohio), Mighty Mite, and might be some left out but cant get pics of them all haha. The other brands page doesnt get much use anymore either. When i post a picture it should sell it self i shouldnt have to put a story or something more behind it or atleast in my opinion.

Not everyone can relate to the older tractors, for the most part, most guys won't get the chance to own what you have. How did you manage to amass such a collection at such a young age? Like the guys on American Pickers say, ITS ALL ABOUT THE STORY. I can find pictures all over the web of old tractors to look at if I want to. With no story attached to them at the end of the day they are just pictures of nice tractors. Me, I like them all.

My brother means no harm bye this topic or is he looking for attention. We realize that that most people dont know anything about the older tractors. We have 73 garden tractors in our collection,we dont look at it as a hobby anymore but more like our 401k plan.I realize there is a story behind every tractor we buy,we hear all kinds of dandy stories but for what we post we prefere the pictures to tell the story.I personally frequent the site dailybut very seldom comment to a post.So for all of you who have commented on our postor have viewed them we thank you.

I wasnt going to respond to this post and just read it, like I do most, but.....

I like the general membership, imop, here just lurk and look at the tractor porn, dont have anything constuctive to say so I dont say anything.

I collect other brands also and have a few different ones. I look at them posts, but thats it, even if I like it.

So now for the constuctive part, also look at your veiws and that will gauge the traffic to your posts.

Tractornut guys.....I like to look at the historical tractors and equipment from the past but my attention gravitates to the repair type posts that I can learn from, use on my equipment or, on rare occasions, add some mediocre input to the post myself.....

Apologies.......

I only have 2 Horses and 1 Economy. All get used and shown. A roundhood like I had as a kid that is the back-up mower, pulls the sweeper year round and is fittted with a back blade for winter sidewalk duty and also has a front blade if needed. A C-160 which is the tractor I always wanted as a kid. It's the main mower and snow mover. The Power King with the loader because it's a loader and it's going to be my plow day tractor. I have no room for more nor do I wish to hoard and stack them to the sky to see how many I can collect until they are all gone. I had an RJ but I didn't fit on them to well and if I can't drive them around I don't want them. I did have a Cub Original that was the best "Driving" tractor I ever sat on but sold it to help pay for next year's travel expenses to the big show. I like all tractors. Some are just more appealing to me than others. Everyone's the same. Something neat and cool to 1 person may be average and plain to someone else

I think it's the same with what ever people collect. some like older some newer. Some like AMC others Fords or Chevy's Not a bad thing

Like Refracman said just cause I look at a post and like it doesn't mean I would add a post about it.

Here is my 2 cents... like you need it, LOL!... you have an amazing collection of tractors by the way... but, at the end of the day "YOU" have to be happy with the collection. I personally could give two ^&%^#$'s what other poeple think about my collection. You don't like it, think its stupid... then don't look.

I think the other thing the kind of grinds people with these older tractors is collectors of these tractors (but not all) feel the need to tell everyone that the have 4 of these and 10 of those... IMO great you have amassed a large number. At the end of the day its not about quanity, its about quality.
