C 160 hydro axel seals

Hello Fellas;

My Dad called me about his 75 C160 tonite. Seems its bee sitting for most of the summer due to no rain at his place. Anyway, he said both axels are leaking and left small puddles under each. He asked me to look into repairing/replacing the seals. I have done one on my '76 C120 and it took a long time to get the old seal out. seems these have wide rubber-like seals and they are a challenge to remove.

Does anyone have a good method for removing the seals...other that digging them out with a pick...which took 2 hours to do on the C120?

The hydro seals are wider, at least the orig. seals are the new ones are much thinner, I take them out with a thin small tip flat screw driver that i have made the tip thin like a small chisel, them punch it in at the edge of the seal near the trans housing, i do this in 3 or 4 spots trying not to push the seal to far in as you make the seal smaller it will come out with a little prying after you get a hole punched in it and the sides pushed inwards. I just did a set on a hydro it took about 15 min. to do both seals in and out after the hubs were off.

I usually use a small pick but I have used small wood or sheet metal screws. Take the small screw and insert it into a small hole that you would make with a pick or small nail. Gently screw the screw into the seal being very careful not to get into the axel and marr it up. After the screw is in leaving it out some you can used pliers to pull on the screw. I have put used two screws on opposite sides to help get the seal out. But before you go to all that trouble try a pick first.

Thanks to Bob Maynard's thread on the hydro parts breakdown, I found the Toro part number: 6449. Is this the seal?

Don't know how this will work yet but I put two of the thin ones in where the old style thick seals were.

if you put two seals on one side fill the gap between them with grease or the seal will run dry and burn up, it could in a worst case wear a groove in the axle, with no oil to lube it.

      Hello all. I am looking for suggestions on adapting the pto from my C series tractor to a harbor freight predator 420 13hp engine. I know the predator motors are a controversial topic however it is the route I have chosen for this particular machine. The intent was to mostly use it for plowing so no PTO required but it would be handy to have. Looking to hear from someone that has successfully done the swap that may offer any advice before I attempt to transfer it over.       1979 c-101 nice project tractor just needs a few odds and ends, steering wheel, coil, carburetor bowl, the wiring was redone by previous owner....all 4 tires are good and hold air it goes into all gears no problem, transmission fluid has been changed, 10hp Kohler, message me or call or txt with any questions, it does run and runs well,  it’s been kept inside since I’ve had it, I would also trade for a mid mount grader blade thanks

      I have what I believe is a Commando 800 but would like to confirm model and year.  Tag reads Model # 1 0100 6; Serial # 790336. Have had it for years (bought from original owner) and want to clean it up some.
