C-161 Restoration

Recommended Posts

mattd860

Last Summer I picked up a 1979 C-161 with a blown motor. The previous owners wife decided to start the tractor with no oil in the motor causing the rod to self destruct. This weekend I had some time to disassemble and start cleaning it up. My goal is to tear it all down, paint it, rebuild the motor, and put it all back together. So far I've completely disassembled the motor and had a local shop bore the piston .010" over and also had them under-size the crank by .010". I'll be updating this post as I go along.

I just hope the hydro works. I bought the tractor with an inoperable motor so I couldn't verify. Clearly the hydro pump has not been able to be cooled for along time.

Change the fluid and filter, and NEVER let it get that way again. Hopefully it didn't get too hot...

that engine is looking good, matt. i spot quite a few little differences between that one and some of mine that ive had apart. after doing four or five of the smaller...10,12 and 14 engines you get familiar with the shape and proportions of them, and i guess i never really thought about it too much before how different the 16 is.

Thanks guys. I'm really taking my time with this rebuild so I can get it done right the first time around. I rebuilt a K301 last year and rushed it because I was excited and ended up having to tear it down 3 times due to various mistakes. I'm also taking my time disassembling the tractor down to the frame so I can pay attention to how it all goes back together :). This whole process will probably take me months but I'm really enjoying putting quality time into the rebuild rather than rushing it and doing a crappy job.

I just finished the motor so here are some pictures. Now I can move on to paint the rest of the tractor.
