Hi I was just wondering if a 10 and a 12 hp head are the same in size and bolt pattern. A friend gave me an screw in timing gauge that fits in the spark plug hole to time an engine at T/D/C. so I have an Idea about drilling a hole and tap it to 14mm in an scrap head. any info would be helpful. If the gauge is supposed to hit the top of the cylinder, I don't think it will work. The spark plug hole on my K301 is over the exhaust valve, and my K241 is between the exhaust and intake. Drilling a hole in a scrap head may do the trick though.

I presume you're talking Kohler, correct? :confusion-shrug:

10, 12, & 14 hp K & M series engines have the same head bolt pattern, but........

If you have to remove the "good" cylinder head to install the one with the "gauge", wouldn't it be just as easy to use a piece of flat steel?

Example: Comp Cams piston stop

Or with the head off, just look at the piston. :confusion-shrug:

OK this is just for rebuilding engines I am about to retire and would like to this as a side line I do have some scrap heads laying around and thought I could use. It has the 8mm 14mm 18mm adapters in this kit I will send picks a long later.I work in a machine shop any way they could easily mill and drill an then tap a hole over the piston dome. Gary B........

There's no reason to use a TDC gauge on a Kohler though.....

They're needed for engines that have the points mounted to a movable base plate, like old motorcycles, some Tecumsehs, etc.

If you're installing an adjustable camshaft, you need a piston stop, degree wheel & pointer, etc.

So Terry even if your rebuilding engines and you would like to set the points this would not work. As long as u are at tdc why cant u set the points from that point???? Gary B……

Points are rarely - if ever - set to open at TDC.

Most points open at some point BTC so the fuel/air mixture has time to fully ignite (explode) as the piston reaches TDC and starts downward on the power stroke. (that's why it's called "timing")

Kohlers have the static marks on the flywheel and because of the external points, they can be adjusted after the engine is running by using a timing light.

ok so u got me there but on the sart/gen engines is ther a place to time when runnig .I do not see a timing hole on the engine cover or on the side as the manuals depict. Thanks Gary B...

The sight hole for the timing marks on the S/G engines should be in the aluminum closure (bearing) plate and the timing marks will be on the back edge of the flywheel.

      Cannot find info on proper drive belt size for my 48" mowing deck.
       
      I have what I believe is a 1990 416-H (41-160E01)  with a 48" deck (xx-48SC02).  All parts guidance on the various web pages recommend a 1/2"x103" belt for both 42" and 48" decks.  However, this size is too long when I tried to replace.
       
      So rather than go trial and error with buying several belts and seeing what gets me lucky, I thought I'd first post a note here.  Thanks for any constructive assistance.

      Just a little bit of information regarding replacement drive belts for the 227-5 in the UK if you are not buying OEM that might help someone in the future.
       
      The part number listed is 108427, which specs out as:
      Top width: 13mm Depth: 8mm Outside Length: 2235mm = 87.99"  
      Sadly, a number of the first sites I found didn't specify that the 88" is the outside measurement so I having trusted their information and with the old belt still installed I just ordered A88s.  
       
      Anyway, as I'm sure you all know, belts are sold based on the internal measurement therefore you would require A86! 
       
      Actually now having spent some more time digging for information about the belt I have found sites specifying 88 as the outer diameter. including http://outdoorpowerinfo.com/, which seems like a pretty handy website.

      Few questions, I have a 1967 wheel horse 657 and would like a little more power for plowing and such
       
      Is the only difference between 657 and 857 and 1057 engine size? frame the same? could i find a bigger engine to put in it without fitment issues? suggestions?

      Hello, my employer has what I have believe to be a 1990 model year, 520H with 60" mower (earlier style with skids on front corners) that has been sitting in a building, unused, for approximately 7 years.  Other than being dusty, it appears to be in good condition.  I believe it has about 700 hours on the meter.  As far as I know, nothing is wrong with it, but we will be conducting a thorough examination, and if OK, a complete cleaning and service of the unit to get it back into shape.  If there is a problem (Onan valve issue, etc.), we will probably sell it.
       
      Anyhow, if possible, could someone with a 60" mower provide for me a measurement of total width of the deck, with and without the chute/deflector?  I'd measure this myself, but the unit is an hour away from me.
      I am interested in knowing if this would fit in a 6x12 enclosed trailer for transport.  Thank you!
       
      Update:  After I posted this, I found the answer to my question - about 65".  Sorry about that!  Anything I should check/look out for otherwise on a 520H that has been sitting?
