snowblower chute cable

well my cable was about to break on my 6-6211 snow blower so i tried trimmer string and it works.

i used .130 size trimmer string (big thick stuff) and it seems to work very well (I,ve heard to use .095 or bigger string).

the .130 fit in the holes on the crank handle like it was made for it .

we'll see how it does when the snow starts flying and it's cold.

i need to get some #40 roller chain this week to replace my stretched one and i'm all set.

ive read to use the trimmer line too,but wonder how it will work in the extreme cold,might get brittle,worth a try though,doesnt cost much and usually some spare kicking around

well i did a test with a 3 ft section of it in my freezer with it and set the freezer as cold as it will get.

after 6 hrs it's still very flexible and i could not break this stuff.

i'll leave it in the freezer overnight and see how flexible it is then.

maybe after it's used for a season it may get weak but we'll see.

either way i think it's a good temporary or emergency use backup to the original cable.

here's a pic how thick this stuff is. it's sitting on a uni-ball pen so you can get a scale how thick it is.

well after almost 24 hrs in the freezer it's still just as flexible as before i put it in.

it looks like cold freezing temps won't effect this stuff for at least short term use.

let's see how it is after a week in there lol.

thats a good test,i might try it on my 30 inch thrower when i rebuild it

yup freezer was at 7 below 0 for 24 hrs and the stuff did just fine.

I once used some old wash line wire. The green kind with wire wrapped by some flexible coating. It lasted the entire season. :dunno:

I used chain on mine! I would have tried the trimmer line had I known about it.

That a great Quick fix! Good thinking. Does anyone know if these blower chutes have been modified to turn on gears not cable?

Wheel Horse actually changed to a worm gear design sometime in the 90's.

I converted my cable chute thrower to the newer set-up using all OEM parts:

That's good info to know. I like to find a chute from a walk behind snowblower that would fit and allow better vertical control. I think I've seen some power controls but I don't need that. :dunno:
