help - brake pedal messed up

OK,

a few days ago adjusted brake band

then changed main drive belt

no problems except - now - the brake pedal is too far back (or forward) - it is completely "up" towards the rear of the tractor. I tried to post pictures but I don't know how

1) What model?

Does it have separate clutch and brake pedals or one clutch/brake on the left?

2) What problem? Are you saying that when your foot is off the brake the pedal position in incorrect?

If so, is it too far down (e.g depressed) or too far up?

3) Does thre brake engage to stop the tractor?

4) Does the clutch engage to start the tractor?

5) Does the clutch disengage allowing you to shift gears?

cluthch on left

brake on right

when foot off brake pedal too far up

when brake pressed band seems to engage fine

can't take it for a test drive - carb off, I am trying to adjust the tappet/valve thing - which is going to be my next series of questions

you guys are great

man am i really messed up

OK 312-8 speed is the tractor

brake on right, clutch on left

replaced main belt - and some engine work

everything is back together EXCEPT -

brake pedal on right is all the way up

just took for a spin and clutch works great - brake works great - except when not appliing the brake it is way up - so far in fact that it is preventing me from putting back on the belt guard - the belt guard hits the connector from the brake linkage to the brake pedal

please help

Is there any friction lining left on the brake band?

How much did you have to tighten the nut to adjust the brakes?

Is the other end of the rod that goes to the pedal threaded?

I know that to adjust the pedal height on the brake/clutch on many models you just disconnected this rod form the pedal and then turn it in or out to the desired point, so this might be the same :whistle:

plenty of lining left

to adjust the band only had to tighten a little

used it to mow a few times after tightening brake - and no problem

the rod that connects to the pedal has a clevis pin not a nut

also, when the brake pedal changed its position I was replacing the main belt and had the cluth pressed with a bugie cord

I am at a loss - I will spend the day tomorrow messing with it

Figured out the problem today. I took off the foot rest on the right side. When I put it back on I did not put it all the way in so the tab for the brake pedal would not sit correctly and the belt guard would not go back on. Now everything is sitting correctly and the tractor runs great.

Next is the carb.

Hi, Greg,

Hadn't had a chance to check the posts for a few days or I would have jumped in sooner. I had the exact same problem restoring my own 312-8 and came to the same solution. You're probably miles ahead in this regard, but I've gotten into the habit of taking detailed photos of everything I dismantle so I have some idea how to put things back together. The exploded diagrams from Toro are great but often lack that critical detail of just how part "a" goes into/over/under/through part "b". :whistle:

I do love digital cameras

When I adjusted the tappets I took pictures of every step

I can never remember where all the linkages go on the carb

I'm too late, and it turned out to not be your exact problem, BUT, one day when I was on my hands knees working on my 416-8 I used the brake pedal as a handhold to help me to my feet. Well that little tab you spoke of on the footboard bends REAL easy. I hadn't realized I'd bent it though, and all of a sudden, my brake pedal was WAY to far back.

Go figure.
