slantram 9 #1 Posted March 20, 2011 Can one of you "Wheel Horse Electricians" tell me if I can just replace an old style AMP gauge with a new style Volt Meter without any changes to the wiring? Thanks, slantram.
rmaynard 14,888 #2 Posted March 20, 2011 Not wired the same. The leads to the ammeter need to be connected together to complete the circuit from the regulator to the battery. Take the two leads connected to the ammeter, and splice them together. Now install the voltmeter and connect the (-) post to ground, and the (+) post to the accessory terminal on your ignition switch or any other place where you have +12 volts only when the key is on. Do not connect it directly to the battery as it will drain the battery when the engine is not running.

Save Old Iron 1,563 #4 Posted March 20, 2011 Since you did not mention the model # of the tractor, we cannot assume the battery supply is fused. You are technically adding an accessory so I would consider adding a low amperage fuse to the circuit also. Just hook the fuse into the 12 volt line supplying the voltmeter. Voltmeters are extremely low failure rate items but better safe than sorry.
