why is the voltage regulator mounted on generator?

im am going to have to wire my no name wheel horse and ive been looking up wiring diagrams but i cant seem for figure out the little stuff, but im learning. so why is the voltage regulator mounter on the starter generator? does it have to be?

other than the mounting bracket for the reg being formed to fit the curvature of the generator housing,

nope,

no reason the regulator could not be mounted at an alternate location on the tractor.

Be sure to maintain a good ground connection and pay attention to the wiring differences between the "B" battery connector and the "L" lights connector.
