GT14 ing. switch

Hello fellas;

Does anyone know what switch would be correct for the GT14 with the elec. PTO?

I see alot on ebay but I dont know which is the one I need. :thumbs:

Does your tractor have electronic ign. or use the standard style coil?

Tom, are you wanting to keep the original 4 position switch? If not the 3 position switch will work just fine. The original switch had 5 wire positions, B, S, L, M and R.

I replaced the 4 pos sw on my GT14 with a 3 pos sw and didn't look back. The 3 pos sw from EBay has a part number 103990. Different lug designations but the correct working requirements for the OFF, ON and START.

If you change to a 103990......Lug designations.

OLD to NEW

B.........B

S.........S

L.........A

M.........I

R.........R

Thank you for the reply. Mine is definitly a 3 position switch. My problem lies in the 2nd position (for the PTO) in that it will not stay in that 2nd position. If I hold it the PTO clutch works fine, but if I let go then the PTO goes off.

Tom, sounds like the switch may have been changed out from a 4 position to a 3 position in it's earlier life some time.

Keep in mind, if the switch is a 3 pos sw and the middle position (RUN) causes a PTO intermittant problem then all wiring in the run position should be affected ???

Still - the 103990 switch is a good replacement. I'm sure you have a wiring diagram, right?

Thanks for the help. I got this tractor a few years back and wiring is all thats left to figure-out. I do have the electrical drawing and think, with the assistance of your reccomendation about the switch, that I can get her going. :thumbs:

On the old design...and this would be for a solid state ignition....

B - battery

S - starter

L - lighter?? (accessory??)

M - this must be the third wire from the engine that grounds it to shutdown

R - charging wire from rectifier

Is this the correct wire placement??

Bob T. you are correct with the wire designations.

The 'I' ignition or 'M' magneto is ground to shut down engine.

The 'L' lighter, accessory, lights or 'A' accessory (same ckt).

Toro #103990 (5 terminal ignition) switch is for BATTERY ignition.

Toro #103991 (6 terminal) switch is for magneto (& solid state/breakerless) ignition.

Do NOT use a 103990 on a mag/ss ignition engine unless you like smoke & fire or like buying ignition parts. :thumbs:

Thanks Terry for catching the ignition switch wiring I indicated incorrectly for the GT14 Kohler K321 solid state / breakerless application. I've just been working on too many B&S vert shafts that need the ground wire to shut the engine down.

This can happen when you pull out of context. :thumbs: My bad.

Bob, hope you haven't let the smoke out of your GT14 yet. :thumbs:

Haha...I just jumped on this post because I wanted to learn something about these techy's and their solid state ignition. I was a little foggy about the switch and I got that cleared up for the most part now...lol. I wasn't the OP, I was the highjacker!! :thumbs:

TT is that the same switch (103991) that would be used for a techy solid state??

It could be....... but it would require the addition of a starter relay (solenoid) when used on the models with the battery & starter cables attached directly to the ignition switch.
