Is the engine original (spec # 30743D? Are you using the stock head lights?? If so the electrical system should be able to keep up. Is the battery in good shape (load test it?)

What voltage do you have engine off, engine idle, full throttle.

What voltage do you get from your stator (Remember it is AC) at idle and full throttle.

The kohler manual for you engine has a good section on diagnosing your electrical system

Paul is asking the right questions.

Also, since it is recommended that you do so, the designers assume you are running the engine at wide open throttle. Alternator output is proportional to engine speed.

So, to conclude it is likely that electrical system is fine. It is either under sized, or your headlights are oversized. But all bets are off if you are not at WOT.

If you look up the engine specs it will tell you the system size in Amps.

Amps * 12 volts = watts

The lights are rated in watts of course, plus the engine draws a bit, probably less than 2 amps (= 24 watts).

You could experiment with LED lights, that would drop the power consumption of the lights by at least a factor of 5.

 to WheelHorse of course and PFrederi (Paul),

Both of these suggestions seem great and I'll do some more checking. I never thought of LED lights so definitely going to look into that.

Thanks again,
