520h getting its balls back

When putting the cam gear back on, is it a shrink fit or press on how did you go about it?

I've read two ways to install that gear. One is by heating the gear up with a torch and slipping it on by hand. The other way I saw in a JD Onan manual is to put it in by using a steel tube and threading a screw down the crank shaft. Tightening the screw pushes on the tube and drives the gear back on.

I am interested in seeing which method you use. I am leaning toward the tube method just because of the fact the shrink method unless you are setup to be able to get it on straight before it cools could be challanging. The key word is straight. I have worked in job shops where I have used the heat shrink method and even something that seems idiot proof can go wrong. Not saying the tube method could have it's quirks too. Keep up the good work I'll be watching with interest.

I installed a cam gear last year using the heat method. Heated the

gear with a propane torch, grabbed it with an oven mitt, and it slid right on.

I was suprised how easy it was. Things don't usually happen that way for me.

hummod, if I knew it would work like that I would do that method in a heartbeat. But I have never had the shrink method work that good for me. Now I am not saying that the shrink method is flawed, just for me it has been a problem. There again Murrphy lives at my house and hangs out in my shop. I am sure other members here on RS know him also.

I've shrunk that gear on a couple of times now. Each time I heated it with a propane torch, until I could spit on it and the spit bounced off :banghead: , and each time the gear slid right on.

I did have the flywheel bolt and a piece of tube right there though, in case the gear "grabbed" before it was all the way on.

The Onan thread on MTF has instructions on how to do it.

If possible, I wouldn't use a torch. Best to use a hot plate. Heats evenly. I have done this many times with cylinder sleeves.

Looks excellent! Especially with the block painted! Looks like brand new aluminum not 20 year old aluminum!

I think louvers in that belt cover would look cool and help with staying cool on that rear cylinder!

Yup did the break in today. LIttle trouble with spark yesturday and today. Intermiten getting spark then loosing it. Coil is new from last year. Since I painted the motor I had to remove some paint to get a good ground. plenty of power to coil. So the condensor or trigger could be the problem.

Heres a video or start up.

listened to the video sound on the start up. It doesn't sound that tinny.
