Bad Voltage Regulator or Stator?

Recommended Posts

mattd860

When the tractor is idling at low throttle, the lights dim and the battery does not charge. Does this indicate a bad VR or Stator or more diagnosing needed??

Tractor is a 79 C-81 with 12hp K301s motor spec # 47340.

Pull the stator leads off of the regulator and put a meter on it. It should read about 28 volts AC when running at 3600 rpm. If that's okay, then I would suspect the regulator. There are many threads here on regulators, but the most important thing to check is to make sure that all of your grounds are good.

This section is relatively new, so a lot of the stator trouble shooting tips are on some of the first posts on page 2. Lots of very good information, really helped me out. Most of the people on here really know their stuff.

I got the battery charging now. When I get a chance I'll check voltage from the stator and voltage regulator.
