Cheers for sorting the UJ's for me Wes

Im always up for a bit of trading :P

Im not quite sure on the plans for the 10hp block :D

It would be nice to rebuild it and put it back in the Raider, but i need to pull it apart to find out how bad the bore really is

Afternoon all, My Wife drove me to pick up the Ebay engine this morning (thanks Wifey if your reading this :D ), and now ive had the time to have a closer look at the heavy blue lump im a very happy camper :DB)

In a change from the normal ebay luck the engine is in much better condition than it looked on the ad :o Heres why.

The wire mesh that keeps fingers out the cooling fan is missing

But so are the very hard to get out cross head screws, and the threads are good :P

One less job :P

100_2629.jpg

Will you look at that.... its had a plastic replacement fuel pump :o

Not original, but a bit newer :P

100_2630.jpg

Time to pull it apart :D

A light dusting of surface rust around the valves, but the valves and seats are in good condition.

Im really starting to like this engine at this point B)

100_2637.jpg

Someone in the past had taken time to de-coke the head, just a slight bit off "ally fur"

where the spark plug had been left out..

Oh and a spider skin :D

100_2634.jpg

The bore is very clean, a slight bit of movement on the piston but way, way better than the current Raider engine :D:P

100_2639.jpg

Im still not sure quite which engine it is :D

It has a 5 cast in the block about here.

100_2631.jpg

And 45 736 02 behind the flywheel about here B)

100_2633.jpg

The sump pan is wrong as you guys pointed out :D it needs to come off anyway to see what the guts of the motor are like.

100_2640.jpg

Have i missed anything

Oh yes, bore size :)

86mm with a quick measure up....

Hmmmm 3.375" is a 14hp engine, 3.375" is 85.725mm :o:o

Yippie its a 14hp :D :P

Ian..... I screwed up! :P

3.375" is a K-301 12hp and 3.500" is a K-321 14hp. (3.250" is actually a 10hp)

I'm sorry that I had them wrong, but you still got a tremendous deal on your engine! :D

Ian..... I screwed up!

Lol, dont worry about it Terry, we all do it sometimes :D

So if ive got my  ing right, if the k241 sump pan fits the k301 then all is cool

If not i need to make an adapter plate to mount the engine in the Raider and all will be cool :D

14hp would of been nice, but 12 is better than 10 :P :P

The oil pan is a direct bolt-on, Ian.

I can't see the side of the block where the dipstick should fasten (for the Raider), but I know you'll be able to drill the 4 holes if you need to.

2 cubic inches smaller won't hurt as much as 6 cubic inches bigger will help.

A 12hp Kohler is a very good engine! :D

The dipstick on the Raider is a big square headed  that screws into the top of the block on the starter motor side. The k301 has the same looking thing but with a sunken square head.

Should be a straight swap

12hp Kohlers are great workhorses, my 312-8 pulls like a train :D

I wasn't sure if your Raider had the bolt-on dipstick.....

You have it made then (that's probably just a pipe plug in the "new" engine.)

Its official... My new engine is a 12hp paperweight <_<

I dropped the sump pan off yesterday, and at first the guts of the lump looked ok.

100_2642.jpg

Until i checked out the sump pan that had been sitting draining away.

HHmm... Me thinks its not had an oil change in a while

100_2654.jpg

Time to check for any play... it didnt look good.

Wiggling Vid

Slightly scored may be an understatement :D

100_2646.jpg

The crankshaft has score marks big enough to get bus wheels stuck in.

Sorry its not the best of pic's but all the close-ups came out blurred.

100_2653.jpg

The piston has seen better days as well

100_2647.jpg

If the crank is savable with a regrind then it might be worth ordering a new piston and rod and rebuilding it.

If the crank is totaled then at least ive got a fuel pump out of the deal :D :P

Ian not one of your better vids...thats a real shame.

I do hope the price was worth the parts alone.

Now what engine will be the better to rebuild...the new 12 horse or the engine in the Raider?

Ian,

I think at least that engine is rebuildable. Like you said if the crank is salvageable then you have an engine for rebuilding. That crank, from the picture, doesn't look as bad as mine did before I had it rebuilt. I hope your crank can be saved.

You -- of all people, Terry -- should have caught that first.

Notice there's not even any stub shafts......

I'm guessing the block doesn't even have the holes for them, if my memory is correct.

(they weren't drilled unless they originally had the gears)

Greetings all from my workshop, my first post from down here :D

Ian not one of your better vids...thats a real shame

Sorry about that, it was recorded on my camera not the video camera :D:P

Well spotted the lack of balancer gears  its the first thing i looked for when the sump came off.

As to which engine will be the best for a rebuild, we shall soon see :P

The raider lump is now sitting on the bench waiting to be opened up after a this coffee (and smoke) break

stay tuned for an update :P

Im a happy bunny again :P

The crank and rod in the K241 are in good condition with only a very slight score mark, you can feel it under your finger but i cant catch a nail in it

The bore looks quite good though i have no way of measuring how round it is.

Oh no balancer gears :D , 1 less thing to cause problems

I will post some photo's later when im at a pc with a card reader.

Catch you all later, im off to order new rings and a gasket set :D

Unfortunate on the old engine, youve got your moneys worth in parts easily though.

Now you just gotta find one with good internals but a broken carb or something.

Ian the vid was good as usual...only ment a let down to see the insides of your new engine that way.

Like Jim says...now if you could find another one rebuilt but with broken carb, broke fuel pump, & no tin.....
