dgjks6 6 #1 Posted December 17, 2009 I am going to attempt to rebuild my 1982 k181 - and I need a new can shaft. There is a block on ebay from a 1965 k181 with a cam shaft. So my question is are all of the cam shafts from k181's the same? or do I need a specific one for my 1982?
TT-(Moderator) 1,127 #2 Posted December 18, 2009 As long as it is a one-piece camshaft with the compression release "spoiler" mechanism (like the one you should have now) it will work. (The later model K-161 7hp engine even uses the same cam.) Earlier (two-piece) cams used a spark retard design (to allow for easier starting) and may interchange, but I recommend the modern compression release cam. Just make absolutely sure it's not from an M8 Magnum engine since every one I have seen does not have a "finished" breaker point eccentric.

TT-(Moderator) 1,127 #4 Posted December 18, 2009 Here's a picture of a relatively new K-161. You can see the ACR spoiler tab and the clearanced section between the lobes for the longer stroke of the K-181.
