  1. New to me 420-LSE

I’ve been looking for a 420-LSE near me for a long time. This one came up for sale about 4 months ago but the seller and I couldn’t agree on a price. Finally yesterday we worked it out and I got it today. It’s not pretty but should be a fun project. It was only about 15 minutes from my house. It doesn’t currently run. Anything other than this model I would never take a chance on something that doesn’t run and the price was right for the condition. Do you think I can save that seat? 😂 The serial number ID tag is missing and the plate on the hood doesn’t have a name engraved in it.
  2. What have you done to your Wheel Horse today?

I tested my new generator tonight. It works!
  3. My New Horse

I installed the generator last night but I haven’t tried running it yet. They guy I bought it from said they were an old toro dealer (no longer) and they found this in an old building they were cleaning out. He said it was NOS but didn’t have the lift rod or flag. I don’t know if those two things are for structural integrity while it is running or just to help lift it in place. It came with the original manual and belt which makes me nervous as it’s been in a bag for 35 years. I’m going to try it out tonight.
  4. My New Horse

We moved about a year ago and sold the 701 another red square member. We have more land at our new house so I needed a newer horse that could mow and use more implements. I really wanted a newer GT classic like yours but they just don’t come up for sale around here very often. That’s a beauty Bob, your seat is still in great shape too. My seat was too far gone when I got it so I put a cover over it.
  5. My New Horse

I got a new horse last fall. I looked a long time for a low hour, newer 314 or 315. Finally found one with 265 hours within a few hours of me. Brought it home, cleaned it up and went through everything and it shined right up. I would highly recommend Forever Black plastic trim dye on tired looking plastic. The next project was the cart. I decided to go with a poly one made by Ohio Steel. I liked the poly over the steel due the low maintenance factor and it got great reviews. Then I built the wood side railings and turned it into a “Toro” cart with some decals from eBay. Finally, I have been searching for a front mount generator for a couple of years with no luck. I found this one on eBay last week that was mid-listed and got a great deal. Mounted it up today.
  6. Please help identify what model this is

Looks like a 701 to me
  7. Raider 14

Looks like a good project Tommy. I'm so envious of your garage set up!
  8. Today's score

I'm no expert but it looks like a 701 to me. No slats in front hood and those footrest are unique to that year.
  9. I was watching it too. It was listed on Craigslist in Altoona, PA a couple weeks ago for around $90 and didn't last long. That was a pretty good flip!
  10. 701 registry

    I got another 701, it's a parts machine. Serial No. 54100
  11. My 701 came with the dozer blade that seems to be fairly difficult to find. Since my kids and I were having so much fun driving the 701 around I decided to get my feet wet with restoring the blade first. It was in pretty rough shape as you can see. All of the metal had severe pitting. My first idea was to strip it and use primer filler and rattle can paint. I spent about 4 hours wire wheeling the frame rails. Through trial and error this seems to be the most effective method to remove the paint and rust. I had the frame rails stripped and I realized that unless I had it sand blasted that I was never going to be able to get into all of the nooks to remove the rust. I made the decision to take it to a shop to have it sand blasted and powder coated. I decided on powder coating for its tough finish. The only downside is that the pitting is visible through the finish. While I've spent much more on it than I wanted to, I love how it has turned out. I ordered all new 316 grade stainless hardware from fastenal. I got the parts back today and put it back together this afternoon. The last piece I need to get is the wear plate for blade and it will be finished.

  13. New guy in Virginia

Hello, my name is Dustin and I live in Henrico, Virginia which is right outside of Richmond. I've been lurking on the Red Square forum learning all I can for about the past year. I'm a city slicker that doesn't even have a yard big enough for a riding mower but for some reason I've been interested in restoring an older Wheelhorse for some time. I finally bought a 701 about a month ago for a restoration project. I'm in the process of getting all the parts that I need before I tear it down. I've been very impressed with how friendly and willingness to help the Red Square community has been. I've especially got to thank racinbob and limited12 for hauling my 701 from Florida to the big show and from the big show to me. Thank you both so much!
