    I also have a 520 that I removed the carb from. I did it without removing the intake. I took a cheap chinese wrench and bent it to fit where I needed it. It was a little time consuming, but it wasn't too bad. It was much easier than removing everything to get to the intake.
  2. D-Series Muffler Replacements

    I used to work for an exhaust manufacturer that sold Stanley mufflers. I do not know what size muffler you need, but Stanley makes many kinds for different tractors. With a little work, one of these may work similar to the B&S muffler. I looked at some of the mufflers for older tractors and they have them with bodies as short as 12.50". The smallest inlet I saw was 1.375". They make them inline and with a 90 degree inlet. I can't remember the prices, but I think ones I bought and priced before were less than the B&S mufflers. It takes awhile to look up the mufflers on Stanley's website, but I think they sell the same mufflers at Tractor Supply. They may have a catalog to look through. If not, you can check at a muffler shop. This is just a thought. Maybe it will help someone.

    I know that the different pulley sizes will change the speed of the transmission. If the speed is slower now compared to before the engine change, I would take an educated guess that it is a pulley issue. If changing the pulley doesn't work, here is another thing to check. I am assuming this is a 520H. Look for dirt and grease built up in the slots on the cam on top of your transmission. My 520H was slower than I expected when I got it. I adjusted everything and it still didn't seem as fast as it should be. My cam was moving very little, so I removed the bolts, one at a time, and cleaned the slots. Mine is now about twice as fast as it was.

    I am still new to the Wheel Horses, but have been around antique tractors most of my life. I remember at least two tractor companies that made "special" yellow tractors. John Deere and Gibson made yellow industrial tractors. The John Deere industrial series were designated by an "I" added to the model number, i.e. MI and LI. I cannot remember exactly what they were used for. The Gibsons were painted yellow instead of their normal gray. If I remember correctly, they were used by the military and ship yards. It has been over ten or fifteen years since I knew the specifics about the Gibson tractors, so this may be incorrect. This is just a possibility for the yellow horses that show up from time to time. I have seen mention a few times about yellow paint under the red. When I see it I remember the other yellow tractors that were normally other colors. That's just my two cents worth.
  5. Charging system problems 520H

    From what I remember reading, the connector and voltage regulator are the two most common issues with the charging system. You can download the Onan manual from the Toro website. It will tell you how to check all parts of the charging system with a volt meter. If it is the regulator, search online. You can find aftermarket parts much cheaper if you do a little looking. I had to buy one for mine and it was 1/3 or less the price of Toro. D.L.
  6. GPH for your Tractor

    I have a 1990 520H. I don't know the size of the tank, but it is less than 5 gallons. If I remember correctly I can mow about 2 to 2 1/2 hours per tank. It takes about an hour to mow the yard and I think I can mow twice without refueling. I have only ran it out of gas once and that was just to see how long it would run on a tank. That was at the first of the season, so I can't remember if it was in the second or third hour. I normally refill before mowing each time.
  7. Cleaning engines

    I haven't cleaned a lawn mower engine in a long time. On automotive drive train, I will use Easy Off oven cleaner. I saw the tip in a magazine one time. It usually works better than Purple Cleaner or degreasers, but they work well, too. Be sure to get Easy Off brand, it works at least twice as good as the store brands. Spray it on and let it sit for a while, but DO NOT let it sit until it dries, then spray it off. I usually use a pressure washer, but it gets nasty. Be sure to wear protective gear with oven cleaner or other cleaners. They will harm your skin and eyes. Another tip is to use a screwdriver, scraper, or wire brush to remove large amounts of grease and grime. This makes the oven cleaner or degreaser work better. When I work on the automotive parts, they are usually torn down for an inspection, refresh, or rebuild. If the part has holes going to the inside, I will tape over small holes and put paper towels into large holes and tape over them. Like I said, this is what I normally do on automotive parts.   8. Exhaust Elbow

    I agree to check a muffler shop. I worked for AP Exhaust, an aftermarket exhaust manufacturer. They make 1 1/2 O.D. 90 degree elbows with a 4.00" bend radius. I think this is fairly common. I looked at their pdf Performance catalog to double check that they had one. You can look at different websites to find a dealer near you. Most sites should have dealer locations. The names I remember are Walker, AP Exhaust, Bosal, Vibrant, and IPC. There are others, but these are the bigger companies I can remember. DL

    I agree with Kelly and Wheel Horse 1045, paint it what ever she wants. My father and I just built a miniature dune buggy for my brother's daughter. We asked her what her favorite colors were and they were pink and purple. The dune buggy is pink and purple. She loves it. Every time she goes to my fathers, she wants to ride her pink thing. As others have said, it can always be repainted. DL
  10. D 18 Steering Wheel Removal

    Hello Tookies, I know nothing about the D-series, but I have a question. Looking at d180man's post, the end of the steering shaft is very much like an automotive style. All cars and trucks I have worked on and some tractors have had threaded holes in the steering wheel. Does the D-series wheel have these holes in them? They will be under the center cap and near the outside of the nut used to hold the steering wheel on. If so, they are put there for a steering wheel puller. I think you can get them at most auto parts stores and it is not hard to make one. My father has three homemade ones and they are usually modified for different steering wheels. Just a little info that may help. D.L.

    M550, I agree with bitten. Most lawn tractors, of this age, seem to use the same bolt pattern. I have a 520-H. I tried to use rims and tires from a Cub Cadet on the 520-H, but they would not work. The offset (backspacing) was different. The center of the 520-H rim is offset mostly to one side. The center of the Cub Cadet rim was nearly centered. Because if this difference, the Cub rim and tire would hit the inside of the fenders before it would bolt to the hub. Your 523Dxi may be different than my 520-H. They may have changed the rearend or axles and changed rims. The easiest way to check, with out removing the rims and trying them is to measure the distance between the center of the rim and the outer edge. The difference on the 520-H rims and the Cub rims was around two inches (this is from memory, so it may be more or less). This is a significant difference. D.L.

    Steve, Great looking tractor. Congratulations on getting it. I am still a WH newbie, but have been around antique farm equipment and engines most of my life. I think this is the first time I have seen one of these. Where would be the best place to find some history and specs on this machine? This looks more like a small tractor than a mower. What type of engine, tranny, and rear axle are used? I tend to ask many questions when I see something unusual. Thanks, D.L.

    Jon, That is a nice looking herd. I am still a newbie to Wheel Horses, but I may be able to help with polishing your tank. My father caught the vintage Airstream "bug" a few years ago. If you don't know, Airstreams are aluminum travel trailers. I only say this because many people I know do not know what they are. Many of the older Airstreams, mid 60's and older, can be polished to a mirror finish. We have experimented with many types of cleaners and polishes to work on the Airstream. We have used automotive buffing compound, aluminum and mag wheel polish, automotive polishes, engine buffing compounds, you name it and we have probably tried it. The best polish we found for buffing the Airstreams is a product called Nuvite, made by Nuvite Chemical Company. It was designed for use in the aviation industry. It is a paste and comes in different grades depending on what is needed. It is rather expensive, but I can't remember the price off the top of my head. One of the large jars, I think it is about a pint, will polish more than a gallon of automotive buffing compound. To polish, you dip your finger into the paste and make inch long streaks on the part about three to five inches apart. We have used this stuff on all types of aluminum, including sheeting, aluminum valve covers, an aluminum water cooler, intake runners, and chrome VW hub caps. It worked great on all of them. To use this, you need a rotary, grinder style, buffer / polisher. It does not work well with a random orbit buffer. PLEASE NOTE: This may not work on your gas tank. Some types of aluminum polish better than others and some do not do well at all. It does work better on some parts than others, but it has worked great for us. Some parts need to be smoothed before using the polish, but it looks like you have already started this. I have used intake buffing compounds on other cast parts, and it worked good, but polishing with the Nuvite made it shine more. If you decide to try it, I hope it works as well for you as it did for us.
